First of all, I hope everyone had a nice Christmas, enjoyed the holidays and received some amazing presents.
When it comes to site flipping, any site can be flipped just as long as you have a buyer. But how much is your site really worth? What are they basing it on? Are they paying way too much?
If you read this blog, more than likely you read Theuniversitykid.com as well as Slyvisions.com. And I’m sure you know both of them are selling their blogs. Matter of fact, Sly already did. He sold it for a $9,500 while Jason a.k.a. TUK can’t seem to get serious bids over $5,000.
If you ask me, TUK should have been sold for, at the very least, the same amount as Sly did, if not more. The reason why I say this is simply the fact that when it comes down to it, TUK had better overall stats than Sly so that would be the logical reasoning why he should have sold it more, right?
Wrong!
When it comes down to it, the buyer will look at the stats, how much revenue you make from the site, but it’s all about their preference on what they want to spend their money on.
So, if you don’t think your site is worth selling, you may just be underestimating yourself. See, no what you think, any site can be sold, all you need is one buyer.
Remember when our site flipping group sold ListLunatic? A lot of you guys didn’t even think it would sell for a couple hundred dollars. Matter of fact, I think there were only like three guesses around what it actually sold for - $2,000.
We didn’t really make any revenue from the site either but we still managed to sell it for a pretty good chunk of change simply because we found a buyer and we had some great selling points.
Now, if you barely get any traffic or barely make any money from your site, I believe there is a buyer out there especially for you… you just need to know where to look and know how to become a good salesman with great selling points.
So, never EVER underestimate yourself! You’ll surprise everyone, including yourself.
Side note: Yes, I have received everybody’s e-mail regarding the site flipping team(s), just haven’t had a chance to full fix my e-mails because I have been out-of-town… and I’m still not home from the holidays yet.
Since some of you guys are about to jump into site flipping, probably for the first time, I figured I’d give you a sense on what people are looking for. It’s very simple doing your research on what people are interested in; just go to your major site selling forums and see what people are asking for and actually buying - see, simple!. But wait, there’s more than just that!
First off, let me just say that the best type of site flip is the unique niches and ultimately the ones that make a good chunk of revenue. Though, I’m sure if we could all find unique niches and make money off of it then we wouldn’t need to do this type of research, now would we?
Matter of fact, if the unique site makes quite a lot of money with minimal work then you might want to consider holding onto it for a while.
Anyways, this is what I do before I create a site in which I will potentially try to flip:
Check Places Like Sitepoint and Other Marketplaces Like That – I tend to visit only the marketplace section where the sites are being sold as well as the section “Want To Buy”. If I see that a few people are looking for sites related to gaming then I’ll try to make a quick Wordpress-based site, make some money for a few weeks (or months) and sell it soon after.
Sometimes people are willing to buy the site based on the potential rather than stats and revenue proof. Just keep that in mind.
Check Out the Competition – No one wants to have a site and compete with millions in the same niche *cough* make money online *cough* so you want to check out the competition. If you’re starting a blog, Technorati is a good place to search to see how many other blogs are in the same niche.
You can also Google specific keywords related to the niche. Eventually, you will want to build links around your popular keywords anyways so you will have to look into this.
Will It Make Me Money? – I understand that some people will buy sites based on potential, traffic and whatever else; but most will base it on revenue. Revenue surrounds site flipping and you should embed this in your head because people will want proof. Plus, you always want to earn money from the site just incase you are unable to sell the site.
Will It Cost Me Anything? – A lot of pro site flippers tend to spend money to speed up the process. I am not one of those types. So, if you’re planning on spending money to build up a site, make sure your net profit is always higher. That should be pretty obvious.
How Much Time and Effort Will It Take? – If you feel as though you’re spending too much time on it then more than likely you are. Now, if you see potential in the site and making money then you should spend as much time as you need on it.
On your quest of researching, you should be checking out other people’s listings, and while doing so, you can take a lot of knowledge just from that. For instance, not only will you see the type of sites that are selling but you will also learn things like:
How to Write Your Site Listing – Writing your site listing will be extremely important because you become an online salesman with a sales pitch because you want someone to purchase your product; in this case, your site. You always want to emphasize the strong selling points and if you need help, just look at some other ones that have already sold.
Other Ways of Generating Revenue – It’s funny but I still manage to find new ways of making money online just by reading site listings. For instance, what networks and programs people are using, how they’re converting, etc.
New Ways of Building Traffic Sources – I’m sure if you’re trying to start a brand new site that you don’t know too much on, reading a similar niche site listing will give you endless information on building targeted traffic.
Anyways, I hope you guys take some time to at least look through site listings just to see how you match up and who knows; maybe you’ll gain a few things from it.
The other day when I sent out my weekly updates, I mentioned that I was recruiting a couple of people to join a site flipping team of mine, well, it seems quite a few people were interested so let me give you some more details in general about it.
First, depending on how many people are interested in joining in this will help me determine if I want to start more than one team or simply continue with the original plan and deny all others.
I don’t want to reject anyone because I’m sure you guys are interested in working as a team, learn from the experience as well as make some money (hopefully). Though, I want to be coordinated and have some dedication into these projects. Basically, I’m looking for four or five members for a group and if I get more than that, I will start a second group.
In each group I’m hoping to get a couple of key members:
A Team Leader – I’m sure a lot of you guys were expecting me to lead the team and honestly I don’t mind. Though, since I’m a pretty busy guy I can’t always whip you guys into shape. So, whoever the team leader ends up being, they need to basically keep us on schedule, nothing huge.
A Designer – Though, this is not fully needed, it definitely helps out a lot. Plus, it cuts out additional costs and expenses we may have.
All Others, Bloggers – You don’t have to be a blogger but you need to be able to write with decent enough grammar and punctuation. Also, I’m looking for people to be somewhat dedicated and if that is not you please don’t join. You’ll be wasting both your time as well as your team members and that’s a hassle I rather not get into.
What I’m looking for in team members:
Dedication – I can’t stress this enough, I need some dedication if you’re planning on joining. If you are not somewhat committed then you will slack off with the work and then everyone will complain about how they’re doing more yet we all get the same share of the money.
See, too much drama for me and I’m sure you guys don’t want working relationships and friendships to go sour over something like this.
Communication – If you’re part of a team, communication is what helps everyone succeed. If we’re all on the same page or not, then we need to speak up and share your ideas, thoughts and whatever else that may help the group.
And I know dedication is important but we all understand if some emergency happens and you’re unable to keep up for a few days. But please, communication is important so we don’t assume the worst. For instance, when my laptop crashed.
Because you know what they say about assuming things, you only make an ass out of yourself. Or something like that?
Whoever joins, please have an instant messenger handy. I prefer Yahoo messenger because we can all join in a chat room to toss our ideas around.
Writing Skills – I’m sorry but if your writing skills are horrible, I sure hope you’re a killer designer! I’m looking to split the work evenly among the team so writing posts is part of it.
I’ve had quite a few people contact me already regarding this, and I think I replied back to a few. The others I haven’t because I’m still trying to recover from my laptop crashing and all my information possibly being lost.
If you have Yahoo messenger, feel free to add me (djay182) and we can discuss it there.
Thanks. Oh, and I know the photos are corny but tell me it doesn’t bring back memories!
If you’re one of those people that despise celebrities, well, I’m not asking you to like them. But building a celebrity website is definitely worth it if you’re looking to make some extra money on the side. Plus, it doesn’t take too long to build one and more than likely you won’t have to do any maintenance to it.
If you’re wondering why you should build one, well, it can work wonders if you’re doing it right. I have a few celebrity websites in which I did a one-time setup and I haven’t touched it since. As of right now, I’m making, on average, a couple dollars a day for each website and like I said, I haven’t touched them since I first set it up.
Now, you’re probably thinking “a couple dollars a day? That’s nothing! Give me a break man!” That may be true but if you learn to rinse and repeat the process then those couple of dollars a day could turn into $10/day… then $20/day… $100/day… and who knows, maybe thousands?
And did I mention you don’t have to touch the site ever again and you will get a check once a month?
On top of that, I heard celebrity sites are pretty good to convert affiliate campaigns, particularly the zip and e-mail submit ones. Hey, I’m not the one to judge but I heard that people who go to those types of websites are generally the same ones that think they can magically win a new iPod or TV by entering in their e-mail address.
Okay, so hopefully I have your attention enough to this point. Now let me tell you how to go about building a celebrity website.
Pick Out Your Featured Celebrity – Think of each celebrity as its own niche, its own site. You can pick any celebrity you want, just as long as they’re popular enough to be searched for. (And even if they’re a D-list celeb, there are tons of people still searching for them)
If you want to check if they’re actually being searched for, try going to Google Trends and simply typing in their name. If a graph appears, you have some people searching for them.
Find The Keywords Around Your Celebrity – Your celebrity’s name is good for a keyword but more than likely it’s highly competitive with thousands/millions of other websites. You want to focus more on the long-tail keywords instead. Try simply entering in their name in the SEO Book Keyword Tool and you’ll end up with tons of long-tail keywords.
Yes, it is official. ListLunatic.com was sold to a new owner and what started off from a group site flipping contest ended up being a fun time with new friends. Of course, the money wasn’t too bad either.
So, most people know that we started this site due to the fact that there was a site flipping contest that was going on at siteflipu.com . And unfortunately, that contest went right down the drain due to the lack of people participating; in addition, I think some people were just intimated by our group.
My group members included Girish, Sean and Forest and it was a pleasure working with all of them. But I think a lot of the credit has to go to our group leader, Girish, because he was the one who negotiated the sale and also he spoke up when we were all slacking off.
The site now belongs to a gentleman named Tom. I haven’t met him directly but Girish says he seems like a pretty good guy, so that was good enough for me. I would like to thank Tom for taking the time out to check out our site and for the purchase but also a special thanks to my group members.
Personally, I will be working with Girish on a site flipping project once again if anyone is interested.
Okay, enough with all the babbling because you guys are probably wondering who guessed the closest to the sale amount, especially since I said I was going to give a small percentage of my cut to whoever guessed the closest.
It was definitely interesting looking at everybody’s guesses especially since I didn’t provide too many stats for you guys so you were guessing blindly. There were guesses on how much the site would sell for ranging anywhere between $50 and $2,500.
