You know how I know someone’s stealing your Top Commentator’s link? I constantly catch people doing it on my blog and then I do some research to backup up my theory with hard evidence. Well, it seems people have found a loophole to the Top Commentator’s Wordpress plugin and they simply benefit from it. Of course, when someone benefits from it another person gets their benefit taken away from them. Let’s work on getting this problem fixed.

How To Steal Someone’s Top Commentator’s Link

This information is only for educational use to build awareness and not intended on promoting hijacking of links.

For the record, I think this is unethical and a very cheap way of stealing someone elses’ work of commenting with their thoughts. But to do it, essentially you would find a name on someone’s “Top Commentator” list and simply comment using the same exact name and just enter in your website information.

Of course, that same person will probably be back to comment again but say it took them 20 comments to make it on the list, all the hijacker has to do is comment once and then they’ll be on the list in no time. Now all the hijacker has to do is just make a new comment after the original commentator makes another one.

Example of A Top Commentator Hijacker (With Proof!)

I’ve seen this done before, by accident and on purpose. You can hijack by accident if someone comments with their generic name. For instance, if I commented with “Jason” or “Jay”, I’m sure I’m not the only ones with that name that could possibly have commented. Though, some people obviously steal and hijack on purpose.

Here’s an example:

As you can see from the screenshot above, it doesn’t look like anything special, right? But why would someone try to rank in search engines for “how to articles” that leads to a health blog? Luckily, I spotted that from a mile away because the person who comments regularly on this blog with the anchor text “how to articles” comes from firehow.com. That would make more sense too… “how to articles” leading to a “how to” website.

Check out the screenshot of the real commentator with that anchor text above:

More Evidence This Person Hijacked Intentionally

So, I actually did some research because this type of thing kind of pisses me off. I mean, someone is taking the easy route and intentionally hurting other people’s hard work.

There’s this website called backtype.com and which you can look up where people are commenting and which website they are linking to. Of course, I checked them out there and it looks like they have been hijacking for quite sometime.

You can check out some of the comments, anchor texts they’ve been stealing and which blogs they have been commenting on here.

Let’s go over a few examples on other sites that support top commentators in which this person has been stealing from.

On Cashtactics, this person managed to comment as “Laptop Carrying Case” which looks like it belongs to Mezzi.com.

On Uberaffiliate, this person managed to comment as “Net Age Web Design” which looks like it belongs to netage.co.za/.

On Feedflare, this person managed to comment as “CB Predator” which looks like it belongs to cbpredatorreview.com/.

On Entrepreneurs-Journey, this person managed to comment as “Nicole Price” which looks like it belongs to Greatpriceshare.com.

On Jonathanvolk, this person managed to comment as “AffiliatePaying” which looks like it belongs to affiliatepaying.com/.

On Tylercruz, this person managed to comment as “SEO Tricks” and I would link to the original commentator but I couldn’t find it.

But you guys get the point, right?

How We Can Work Together To Stop This

I have to give some credit to this person (and any other people who hijack) because they found this loophole and they actually do take time to comment. Unfortunately, what they’re doing is still unethical.

So, what can we do to stop this?

Well, there’s only so much one person can do… but if we worked together then there will be a bigger impact. I already e-mailed this person informing them that I think it’s unethical what they are doing but never received a response. I mean, why would I? But here’s a few things we can do:

Remove Their Link – By simply deleting their comment is a great start so you’re not supporting their unethical link.

Blacklist Their Site On Top Commentator’s Plugin – All you have to do is add their URL to the Top Commentator’s “Filter URLs.” In case you don’t know how to do it, all you have to do is go to plugins – “edit” top commentators – and enter the website in the “filter_urls” section. Here is a screenshot below:

Spread The Word - Spreading the word simply helps fight against spammers and people who basically steal. Write a post about it, inform the blog owner’s that your link is being stolen, etc.

Fix The Loophole In The Plugin? – I personally don’t know how to fix it and have yet to contact the person who created the plugin but I’m not exactly sure if there’s a way to fix the problem. If there is, feel free to help out!

I’m sure there is a lot more we can do to work together to fight against thieves and if you can think of any, feel free to add it my list.

Conclusion

Again, I’m just speaking out on what I think is fair and obviously when people do this, it is equivalent to stealing. Don’t get me wrong, they are all legit comments and that’s probably why no one has really noticed but I’m just supporting the cause to help out.

If you had this done to you and have proof, let me know and I’ll add you to this post and give you a backlink to your website. Of course, please show detailed proof because I’m sure there are some people who will want to try to get a cheap backlink from me.

Hey, I’m just saying… it has happened before!

I know some of my family and close friends are reading this and I’m probably not talking about you guys especially if I never worked with you before or we have an ongoing working relationship. But I have worked with some of you guys and honestly, it just doesn’t seem to work out.

Now a lot of these family and friends that I work with aren’t too keen of how making money online even works. Matter of fact, these are the same people who are just completely shocked that you can make money blogging and try to jump on the opportunity with it comes. Though, for some reason all they hear is “make money” but it seems as though no work gets done.

All Money No Work

I was once told that money doesn’t grow on trees because, well, it doesn’t. And even if it did, you still have to put some work into climbing up to pick money off, or raking in all the money that falls. Especially, if you want to make money, it doesn’t magically just happen.

It’s not like winning the lottery. And again, even if you win the lottery, it takes someone to walk over to the store, possibly fill out that little numbers sheet and purchase it. Then make sure you check back to see if your numbers was actually picked.

I tend to bring up working online with just about anyone I come across and I do understand that it’s not for everybody. But I don’t understand why they were go so far into working online to not do anything.

They Are Too Comfortable

This is another reason why I’m not a big fan of working with close friends or family, simply because they get too comfortable so they think they can just relax and get it easy. Don’t get me wrong, I think I’m a very laid back person but when push comes to shove, I get my work done. And honestly, I expect them to do the same.

For instance, I have this one person/friend who joined one of my teams, registered, learned the process and kept telling me they were going to do X, Y and Z for a couple of days straight and guess what? Nothing.

And honestly, I basically handed them the plate to eat and they just needed a folk and knife but they just didn’t go get it so they didn’t eat. And incase you didn’t get that reference (because I’m weird), I basically gave them everything they needed to do plus more, they simply just didn’t do it.

The unfortunate part comes this awkward moment when I have to cut ties with them because it just isn’t going to work out. I can understand if it was just me but I have to look out for my team on this one as well.

Lack Of Or No Communication

When you’re working with someone, matter of fact, if you’re just friends with someone, I thought it was pretty logical to communicate. If there were no communication, more than likely there would be no friendship, partnership, etc.

I think I see the lack of communication as they may be too scared to tell me “no” or they don’t want to do X, Y, Z, but I always tell people to just communication with me. If this online entrepreneurship isn’t for them then just tell me. There’s no hard feelings.

Now if they just try to avoid the whole situation, that’s where the problem lies.

Hardheaded And A Lot of Head Butting

I’ll be the first to say that I’m a little hardheaded but I’m actually pretty open minded than most. I’ll debate to the very end but if I’m wrong then I’m wrong and I’ll admit it. If someone has a better idea or argument, I’m more open to that than letting my hardheadedness get in the way and help sink the boat.

But there should be a lot less head butting or else working with family and friends just won’t work. Some people go into it thinking they know everything, yet, I had to teach them. There’s no need for that.

Bitter Taste or Hard Feelings

With everything I just said, some people have hard feelings and not only will your working relationship not work out at the end but there may be some bitter taste.

For instance, if you were to own a company and you hired your brother and they simply didn’t do any work because they’re related to the owner, well, they shouldn’t have any hard feelings if you cut ties with them. And they shouldn’t have hard feelings because they took advantage and didn’t do any work.

When it comes down to it, some people’s feelings may get hurt or people might get offended but if two and two don’t add up then it’s probably best not to mix things up.

Conclusion

Don’t get me wrong, my family and close friends will probably always be there for me in person and support me but working with them doesn’t seem to work. At least when it comes to working online. But who knows, maybe it was just a certain group of people that just aren’t that interested in making money online or just doesn’t have that motivation to do the work for it. Maybe it was just me.

Whatever it was, if I can work with people who are motivated enough and can get work done then I don’t care if you’re a family member, friend, random person or a bum. If we can be successful together then a little head butting is fine with me… it’s just when no work gets done that partnering up with whomever eventually won’t cut it.

Sorry for the long rant!

Maybe it’s just me but lately I’ve been seeing Darren Rowses’ face everywhere I go on the internet. Incase you guys have no idea who Darren Rowse is, he’s literally a “Pro Blogger” and makes a great living from it. His main blog is ProBlogger.net and he has over 141,000 subscribers, currently.

Anyways, I admit I don’t go to his website(s) as often as I would like especially since he has some useful information which is always helpful. And now that I’m pretty much done brown-nosing , we can finally get to where I’m seeing his face on the internet.

Well, I’m basically seeing his face on almost every site that has Google Ads displayed. Don’t get me wrong, I know he’s pretty popular, especially in the blogosphere, but how often would I want to see him. Of course, no disrespect to Darren but I swear I’m seeing him more times daily than I see my e-mails. And I check my e-mails a lot throughout the day!

Don’t worry, don’t worry, I wouldn’t want to see my face everywhere I go either.

To be fair, he probably has nothing to do with it. Well, maybe just a little bit. But it seems as though Chitika is running a crazy Google Adwords campaign and that’s why we’re seeing his face everywhere. Just think of him as one of the new spokespersons of L’Oreal Makeup, um, Chitika.

Incase you haven’t noticed it because your eyes shuts down just about any ad that’s on a website, it would look something like:

I know that’s probably not the best ad but that’s the latest one that I’ve seen. But I have seen their ads (and Darren’s face) on almost all of the main sites that I visit regularly including Youtube and most of my own sites. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw him lurking at you in the comfort of your own home while checking your e-mails! It almost feels like he’s internet stalking you!

But have you seen him lately? He’s like those Geico commercials with the money that has eyes with the “Somebody’s Watching Me” song playing in the background.

Please note: This post was just a joke and it’s not intended on offending anyone, particularly Chitika or Darren. I simply just wanted to comment on him appearing everywhere.

When I got back home last night I received an odd e-mail from my hosting company with the subject line “Account WILL Be Suspended Urgent Response Required”. Of course, I’ve had numerous chats with my hosting company for help and support so I already knew this e-mail was legit. But I was very curious on what I did wrong to potentially get my account suspended.

As you know, you should always abide by their rules and regulations because they can delete your entire site(s) if you break any of their TOS without even warning you. I’m just lucky they notified me because it looks like a company filed a copyright infringement claim against one of my sites. Well, technically, it was one single post that was apparently ranked second for a popular search term.

My hosting company doesn’t automatically take sides but just like any other claim they have to take it extremely serious. And I’m taking this pretty serious as well and cooperating. They never accused me of anything but when it comes to legal stuff they obviously have to take things seriously.

Of course, I deleted the URLs that I was being accused of because it’s simply not worth the hassle.

Though, I’m not 100 percent sure what I did wrong given the fact that I wrote that post myself. I’m going to have to assume it was either the image I used or maybe I posted about a trademark company. It could very well be both but as of right now I couldn’t tell you until I hear back.

The reason why I’m posting this is to inform you guys to be careful on what you post about, what you include in the posts (images, URLs, etc) and where you get the information from. More importantly, always read TOS carefully before committing to anything.

I try to be positive and look at this situation in a brighter light. I’ve always said that the more haters you have and the more attention your sites are getting whether it’s positive or negative, you’re definitely on the right path to being successful.

Think about it, if I wasn’t ranked on the first page of that particular popular keyword, do you think they would be after me? Probably not. I’m a nobody. Well, a nobody that was ranked second in Google.

But this was my first copyright infringement claim and I am hoping this will be my last as well. Has anyone else had a similar experience before? What do you think was the reasoning for mine?

Any legal people out there? I would definitely like you to drop some knowledge on this. Thanks!

I’m a little late but I actually just noticed this earlier last week. There was a pagerank update 2010 that was apparently done on New Year’s and we’re all seeing it now. Of course, I’m always mentioning that pagerank means nothing and pagerank is useless and so on but some of you guys like to live and die by it.

Currently, DatMoney is still a PR0 on this update and I’m perfectly fine with that. I checked most of my keyword rankings and nothing has drastically changed. I may have moved up a position or down one but all and all, it seems as though I’m still ranking just fine in Google. That’s all I care for and that’s all you guys should really care for too.

Some people assume things about how valuable pagerank is but in actuality, you don’t need one to get ranked on the first page of a popular keyword. If that were the case, a lot of smaller blogs would outrank just about everyone!

One of my sites is a PR4 and ever since the new pagerank update, I swear I’m getting ranked and indexed worse than I was before. I see a lot of my posts getting ranked 10-15 when previously it was in the top 5. Also, I noticed that instead of my posts getting indexed within a day (or two), it seems as though it takes about a week on average now.

Shoot, I rather have a PR0 and have my posts indexed within a day than a PR4 and having it index a week later! I guess that’s just an example that pagerank is basically useless.

It’s pretty useless similar to this post. I just figure some of you guys like to know when Google updates their pageranks and stuff so I figured I’d mention it. Though, most of the time I’m just bashing how worthless a pagerank really is and how unimportant it is when it comes to getting traffic or making money online.

Anyways, how did you guys do on this pagerank update?

So, I’ve run into various places in which you get paid for your ideas but to me, it’s all on an honor system and believe it or not, a lot of people are not honest.

There are plenty of websites like this. The very first one I ran into was a website in which you come up with domain name ideas for potential clients and if your domain name idea gets picked, you get paid.

The one I noticed most recently was on Sitepoint. They have a new section on their website entitled “Name My Thingy” in which people post what they are looking for and you guys come up with the idea and get paid for it. The thing I’m not a big fan of is the simple fact that you really have no way to prove an “idea” is yours.

Of course, you can go through the whole legal system, create a blueprint of your idea and get it copyrighted but then again, who really wants to go through all that hassle to get paid a few dollars? A few hundreds? Okay, if it were thousands, then I would definitely consider getting my “idea” copyrighted.

But the thing about it is when most people see someone offering $100 for an idea they think that’s a bargain. What if they liked your idea, decide not to pay you and then use your idea anyways? There’s nothing you can really do but report them to Sitepoint or whatever third party company you’re using if you actually see them doing it, right?

On top of that, I’d feel kind of weird if my “idea” was used by a company and it exploded into a million dollar theme. For instance, the guy that came up with the slogan for Nike, “Just Do It”.

Anyways, I guess this just became more of a rant with question more than anything. If you guys are interested in paying someone for ideas, Sitepoint’s Name My Thingy is currently FREE to get things listed. Take advantage of the free opportunities while they’re still around.

But have you guys ever tried out places that pay you for your ideas?

It seems as though every couple of months I have to write another post on my low tolerance of spam. I have to continue to remind people that no one likes spam and if people keep spamming, there will be some consequences.

Recently, there has been a few spammers that have been commenting here but there is one in particular that I gave plenty of chances but they just continue to spam. This person has been commenting here for quite a while with some regular comments but then I see a lot of generic comments and when I check, they basically copied and pasted a paragraph from someone elses’ work.

It is very easy to tell a spam comment nowadays because most of the comments either have nothing to do with what you just wrote or its so generic that they probably just used the same comment for a bunch of other posts.

Of course, occasionally I’d see the generic type comments and if I’m bored enough, I’ll simply search for that comment. What I do is copy and paste their entire comment into Google and see what pops up. Usually if its a spam comment, the first search result will be exactly the same (or like 99%) and it’ll either be on someone elses’ post in their comment section or it’ll be within that person’s content.

In the particular case I’m talking about, this person went to an article directory (ezarticles, goarticles, etc) and just copied a portion of their article and pasted it as a comment on my blog.

Well, I gave this person a few different chances because I gave them the benefit of doubt. Plus, they did have some legit comments but I think they did it to bypass the whole getting approved in my comments. Unfortunately, they just kept doing what they were doing so I removed them from my top commentators, removed those comments that I found were copied and pasted as well as removed their links within their comments.

Matter of fact, I think that is one of the reasons why I was probably penalized by Google because of spammers. So, take this as a lesson and know that spam can and will actually hurt you. So, just like anything else, make sure you take action… against spam!

It looks like there has been a Google Pagerank update in October 2009 and this time, its not too good. At least not for DatMoney and for those that are die hard fans of the infamous Pagerank.

I actually just stumbled across this by accident because I was checking how many backlinks my sites were getting and where its being linked from. I usually check sites (not just mine but various sites) at dnscoop because they tell you the Pagerank, how old the site has been around, the backlinks, Alexa rating, etc all on one page.

I noticed one of my sites’ Pagerank changed recently so I figured I would check my main sites. Since dnscoop updates like every week after you have checked a site, I just Googled “pagerank checker” and checked a few sites. That’s when I noticed DatMoney was a PR0.

Oh no! What am I going to do? How am I going to live life as a big zero?!

Well, I’m just going to continue to do what I have been doing since I was a PR0 before, till I went to PR4 (and everything in between) and guess what, the money, traffic and everything that goes with it still hasn’t changed.

Of course, I might lose some commentators, some potential blog reviews and just because I’m a PR0 now doesn’t mean I won’t be a PR4 the very next time around. I mean, its happened before and I’m sure it’ll happen again!

The last Pagerank update was in June 2009 and I remained at PR2. Before that, I believe the Pagerank update was in April 2009. I was also testing out all these “nofollow” attributes and it looks like “nofollow” isn’t really a big deal. I mean, I’m back to a PR0 and I added “nofollow” tags to quite a few things on my site.

If you know me, you know that I could careless about Google Pagerank. Just as long as your site doesn’t get de-indexed then it doesn’t matter too much. Your traffic shouldn’t really change and your money shouldn’t change either. Remember when I made almost $1,000 in February in 2008 without a Pagerank?

See, my point exactly! Pagerank = Still Worthless!

So, if you guys care about your Google Pagerank, how did you guys do this past update?

I haven’t been updating as much as I used to but I still manage to get a few posts in every week on DatMoney. And since I started as an internet entrepreneur I came up with a lot of friends who started around the same time, have similar stats and so on… but the difference is, I still manage to keep my blog updated.

I understand that there are other projects that have priority, maybe a day job is taking over your life or there are some personal issues but it looks like more and more blogs that I came up with are slowly fading away. Some blogs have been sold, some barely update their blog once a month and some I question “what happened?”

Great and Helpful Posts vs. “Eh” Posts

I’m sure everyone would rather take great, useful and helpful type posts over anything. And I was once told (maybe not directly) that it’s better to write great posts less frequently than to write “eh” posts daily.

Quality over quantity. And yes, I definitely agree with that point. But of course, its the blog owners decision on what they want to write about.

But in the situation I’m talking about with blogs that aren’t as active, they don’t write useful posts once a month. Instead, they seem to just write a post just so they can keep their blog breathing… with a respirator.

What Happened to These Blogs?

I don’t mean to put these blogs out there but I was a big fan until it slowly started to fade away. Again, I’m sure they’re off to bigger and better things that probably prevent them from updating but come on, at least let your readers know what’s going on so they’re not just anxiously waiting for… nothing.

But here are some blogs that I used to follow regularly that have just faded away for whatever reason.

TheNetFool – Was a big fan of Jim’s and still am, though, his blog is slowly fading away. His most recent post “Whew! Close One There!” lets us know that his domain name actually expired and he renewed it late so anyone could have purchased it.

Honestly, if I knew, I would have! But besides that post, the last one prior was almost two months ago!

Bloggernoob – Was a big fan because of the straightforward and always hilarious noob, whom knew how to make money online. But the blog hasn’t been updated since the end of August and the post before that was in the beginning of June.

What’s going on?

Make Money Dynamo – I was excited when this blog started by our friend Jason and his partner. I was also excited with the great and useful posts they supplied. I was even okay with the fact that they would only update with the best tips and nothing else… and it would be only once a month.

But um, it hasn’t been updated since May. We just went through the end of spring, the entire summer and we’re in the fall and still no post.

The University Kid - Speaking of our friend Jason, remember when he sold TheUniversityKid? Well, quite honestly, it hasn’t been the same since. It started off pretty good with the new owner and I was willing to give it a chance but slowly there have been less posts (maybe 1 or 2 a month) and a lot of them are just interviews.

If I wanted only interviews, I would continue to watch Jay Leno. But seriously, in my eyes, the content just haven’t been the same since the new owner took over. Nothing against him but I guess I had higher expectations.

Uberaffiliate – Uber was definitely an uber affiliate with very helpful posts for people getting into affiliate marketing. But I guess he completely burnt out on blogging and went the Twitter route instead.

It doesn’t matter to him because he continues to make hundreds of thousands from affiliate marketing but damn, I definitely miss those witty and funny posts with great content on top of it.

Carlocab – I followed Carl’s blog for a little while but just stopped for whatever reason. When I did go back, it definitely wasn’t the same. Matter of fact, you’ll probably see more guest posts than anything.

Carl’s last post was at the beginning of September. If you guys don’t know, he highlights being number 1-3 for the popular search term “make money online” but he’s just slowly falling off. As you can see from the screenshot below, he fell to the 8th spot on my search for it.

I wonder what he’s going to be highlighting once he falls out of the top 10 from that search term?

There are a lot of other blogs that I used to follow but they just fell off completely or in some instances, the blog is just no longer there for whatever reason so there’s no point in linking to them.

So, Are Bloggers Burnt Out From Blogging?

In this niche, a lot of people find out the hard way that its not easy making it or continue to make money from it. Though, I do understand that people have other priorities so its not necessarily the fact that they’re burnt out but they probably just don’t have the same time to dedicate like they once did.

Personally, I have other revenue sources that bring in more money so I tend to focus on what works for me and try to build off of that first. I think that’s part of the reason why I’m not posting everyday like I used to so I definitely understand.

But bloggers being burnt out… well, I know some definitely are. And if you’re in the MMO niche, it’s over saturated as is so a lot of people give up when they know its not as easy as it looks.

Anyways, I hope none of you guys just quit out of the blue. I know there must be good reasons but just take a break instead of overwhelming yourself. The whole point is to avoid getting burnt out.

So, do you guys know any other blogs that have faded fast that you used to visit regularly?

So, today if you visited this internet entrepreneur and you checked out my little Feedburner chicklet which displays my feed count, you would have saw the little image below:

Of course, this is the closest you can get to 1,000 without actually getting to that number. As you guys are well aware, feed counts fluctuate on a daily basis so I’m pretty sure tomorrow it will drop down to 970 or so. But I’m getting a little excited simply because once I officially hit that 1,000 mark, there are a few things that are going down.

And yes, that includes having a contest to celebrate. I already know what kind of contest it will be and I’m hoping it does not disappoint. But I’m also still looking for sponsors so if you are interested in contributing anything, that would definitely be appreciated!

There are a few other things I’m probably going to be changing once I officially hit the 1,000 subscriber mark.

Easy Access to Subscribe – I should have done this a long while ago but if you look at DatMoney, there’s really no easy access for new visitors to subscriber. And by that, I mean simply typing in your e-mail address on the sidebar or something equivalent.

A lot of people still don’t know what RSS Feeds are and if they don’t know what it is, it’s our job to help them out by simplifying it. Maybe put something like “Enter your e-mail to get tips on how to make Adsense money” or something that really stands out.

Change in Theme - Besides giving easy access to potential subscribers, I figured it’s finally time for a change in this theme. Maybe this is what I needed this whole time to gain more subscribers and potentially make more money with this blog.

Of course, Contest - I’ve been mentioning this for a while now but I haven’t even been actively promoting to increase my subscribers. But I did say once I hit 1,000 subscribers, I was going to come out with a contest and personally, I think it’s long overdue.

There are a few other things that will probably change once I hit 1,000 subscribers but those are just a few I can think of.

Do you guys think I should do anything else once I hit 1,000 subscribers?
