How I Did With My 2009 Goals

goals

It’s always a good thing to revisit your goals and of course, analyze your stats. Well, around the same time last year I decided that I would actually set some goals for myself for 2009. I didn’t set too many as I didn’t want to overwhelm myself but even this short list made me really think.

Let’s go over the five main goals I set for myself and see how I have progressed.

Increase my RSS Feed Count to 1,500 - Obviously, I didn’t succeed but then again, I didn’t push as much as I should have. I believe I started the year around 700, give or take, and I’m currently sitting somewhere around 1,050ish.

When I came up with that goal, I figured I could easily double up my numbers over a span of a year. Unfortunately, so many things happened this year which also included the fact that I was going to sell this blog! Of course, that didn’t end up going through which is a good thing.

Technically, it was a failure but I did increase my RSS Feed count by 150% over the course of the year. so, although I didn’t meet my goal I did make good progress.

Make $1,000/month from this Blog Alone - Another fail! Like I mentioned previously, I considered selling this blog and even put it up for auction which seemed to have hurt my value a little bit. Of course, it started to pick up a little more of late as I get back into the swing of things.

When I came up with that goal, I was figuring I would make somewhere around $12,000 within the year. I just figured if I could average $1,000/month I would meet that goal especially given the fact that with online entrepreneurship, revenues tend to fluctuate month to month. And things come up that sometime require your attention too which takes you away from the entrepreneurship.

I haven’t gone over all of my earnings that I have made from this blog alone yet but if I had to guess, I would say its probably closer to half of my original goal.

My excuse is the fact that I’m not fully into selling out on my blog and just pushing affiliate links to my readers. If I did, I would do it every couple of weeks and I would write a whole lot of paid reviews but I don’t.

Make a Total of $60,000 in 2009 Online - Fail! Damn, I’ve been failing in all these goals so far, huh? Honestly, I don’t think I came anywhere close to this figure because of the lack of time I have to actually spend on working online. Again, a lot of things did come up this year which also included a possible layoff from my day job to getting a full-time day job which definitely pays a pretty penny.

I had a tough decision to make and with the economy being sucky and the fact that I have student loans and bills to pay I decided to go with the safe route and took this full-time job. Without giving away my salary, let’s say if I included that figure to my total of 2009 then I would have definitely exceeded the $60K. :D

Partner with Other Online Entrepreneurs - I think this was both a success as well as a fail. The reason why is the fact that I did partner up with a handful of other online entrepreneurs but I think the majority ended up failing. I have a few that are still going pretty good and I’m going to try to build off of those ones.

Revisit Old Projects I Kept Putting Off - This is another success and fail. Though, I didn’t specify how many old projects I would revisit. I had a lot of ones I revisited, finished and they are up and running as we speak. Of course, I still have some that I started and still haven’t finished and a year as almost passed on some of them because the domain names are set to expire.

One of the past projects that I’ve been putting off for quite sometime as almost done and up and running and yes, I will let you guys know what website that is. It’s the same website I purchase a WP theme for it.

In conclusion, a lot of challenges arisen for me especially the fact that I had a very up and down year both with my job, online entrepreneurship and personal life so it was hard succeeding in these goals. I still only do this online entrepreneurship part-time only and just a side job. I’m hoping the more experience I gain and the more I’m able to work on it that I can transform this into a full-time gig.

But until then, I’m going with the safe route with the great benefits I get at my day job. Because even if I make $60,000 a year online, about a third of that is going to go to taxes, about 10 percent will go to insurance and so on and so on.

So, how’d you guys do with your 2009 goals?

Everybody is doing these trackbacks and stuff, should I make one.

I started my newbie-type blog back in August, so I don’t feel I could do something like this, but maybe I’m wrong.

Thing is I do not have any big goal to achieve with this blog, I simply run it to figure out what is good and what not, so once when I start the profi-type blog I am on the right track from the beginning.

For getting success you should be ready to get fail, but thats not the end. In 2010, setting a great goal can be the soulution for fail of 2009.

    Interesting.

The good thing is that you haven’t completly failed. The truth is that you’ve improved your blog a lot and maybe had put a bit too high expectations.

Anyway I wish you luck in 2010 and hopefully you can achieve your goals you set for 2010.

Many of the “make money online” bloggers are stating that they haven’t reached most of their goals…but at least they set their sights high.

    Happy New Year.

I didn’t really make any concrete goals for 2009, but I would say they were mixed, there were good times as well bad times. For me as far as goals, my goal is always to improve as long as I improve I see it as a success. Speaking of which… what are your goals for 2010? I am guessing you will make that your next blog post :D

    Till then,

    Jean

Hey Jay, great idea this of writing your goals at the start and reviewing them at the end of the year. Think I’m going to start doing the same.

One of the good episodes for me last year was meeting you. Though we worked together for a couple of weeks with no tangible results I really believe that we learned interesting things on how to do things from each other.

Anyway… I always keep visiting your blog to grab some cool tips and stuff. I hope one of these days be me the one who share some secret info :)

I’m graduating from college this spring so my goals for summer are to have a grad party for the family, a grad party in Vegas for the friends, and get my career off the ground.
