It seems as though every couple of months I have to write another post on my low tolerance of spam. I have to continue to remind people that no one likes spam and if people keep spamming, there will be some consequences.
Recently, there has been a few spammers that have been commenting here but there is one in particular that I gave plenty of chances but they just continue to spam. This person has been commenting here for quite a while with some regular comments but then I see a lot of generic comments and when I check, they basically copied and pasted a paragraph from someone elses’ work.
It is very easy to tell a spam comment nowadays because most of the comments either have nothing to do with what you just wrote or its so generic that they probably just used the same comment for a bunch of other posts.
Of course, occasionally I’d see the generic type comments and if I’m bored enough, I’ll simply search for that comment. What I do is copy and paste their entire comment into Google and see what pops up. Usually if its a spam comment, the first search result will be exactly the same (or like 99%) and it’ll either be on someone elses’ post in their comment section or it’ll be within that person’s content.
In the particular case I’m talking about, this person went to an article directory (ezarticles, goarticles, etc) and just copied a portion of their article and pasted it as a comment on my blog.
Well, I gave this person a few different chances because I gave them the benefit of doubt. Plus, they did have some legit comments but I think they did it to bypass the whole getting approved in my comments. Unfortunately, they just kept doing what they were doing so I removed them from my top commentators, removed those comments that I found were copied and pasted as well as removed their links within their comments.
Matter of fact, I think that is one of the reasons why I was probably penalized by Google because of spammers. So, take this as a lesson and know that spam can and will actually hurt you. So, just like anything else, make sure you take action… against spam!

Instead of complaining about it, why not put measures in place to outright prevent it from happening again. WP-Spamfree is a great plugin that allows you to instant block these types of comments by blacklisting the offender without having to deal with a .htaccess file.
…just a suggestion, but one that I use without fail for some of my more trafficked blogs.
Spamming is really tolerence for the site owner as they should be minimised by using some tools.
I also noticed that your PR decrease to 0 from 2, really spammer are going headache for us. People should avoid spamming and write some nice comment.

Flippachick a.k.a. Yolanda – But WP already has an option to blacklist comments as well. Is it really necessary to install WP-Spamfree and is it that good? Also, I’ve been meaning to get in touch with you with possibly a JV if you’re interested. Do you have AIM or anything equivalent I can hit you up on?

I HATE SPAM! I spend more time deleting junk messages than I would like to. I have other things that I need to be doing with my online businesses. I have over 25 blogs, so as you can imagine the junk piles up fast. I have to pretty much dedicate a few hours once a week to go and get rid of all of this junk.
Right there with you on this topic!
Chris
Please check out my credit card site thank you very much.

Spam is damn annoying but Akismet takes care of most of that. Email spam, on the other hand…

Spam is really a pain in the ass, but if you have the right spam plugins installed, then their should be no problem.
I just received 100 spam comments today, all by same username and website.
Very innoying.
I am wondering if by adding a portion of an ezine article to a comment section of a blog does that make the ezine article less original and make it so the article does not rank as well. That would be a crappy way to eliminate competition in the article directory wouldn’t it? I don’t get what the spammers are trying to accomplish. The more the spam the more restrictions that get put into place. That means less opportunity to make money for us. Damn it Jim!
YEAH! they should not be tolerated and should be exterminated lol.
Spam is annoying no doubt. Especially when you are interested in actually reading comments and you have to wade through piles of Spammy advertisements and rubbish. A lot of it is smutty too.

spam does get old. Most of the spammers are easy to spot becasue they are so lazy.
they do get banned eventaully and then they probabaly wish they were above board with there comments.
I think you are right about spamming that no one likes as its not a proper way. Those who use it are surly lazy at work.
