Other Search Engines Besides Google

other search engines besides google

I know Google owns the internet but you guys have to remember there are a lot of other search engines besides Google. And quite frankly, you can get just as much traffic from all those other search engines put together than Google itself if you work it right.

So, How Exactly Do You Work it Right?

That’s a very good question. The two biggest things are the same ones to get ranked in Google: keyword research and building links. Those two are the main things you guys should focus on to get any traffic from search engines.

I already posted on how you can do both so I won’t repeat the entire thing on this post.

When you get enough links, just try to test out your main keywords by going to Yahoo.com and searching for your terms. If you see your post, URL or whatever on that first page, then you’ve definitely done enough. Of course, don’t settle for less, you should always try to build links for your website.

The more you build, the more search engines you find out about. But more importantly, the more search engines find out you. Well, technically, your website. :D

Some Other Search Engines Besides Google

Just based off of one of my sites, these are the various search engines that I have gotten traffic from (in no particular order):
Search.com
Yahoo.com
Bing.com
AOL.com
Ask.com
Virgilio.com
Altavista.com
Baidu.com
CNN.com
Netscape.com
Alltheweb.com

So, I just listed 11 other search engines besides Google. And when I was researching different search engines, I found that there were hundreds of ones that I have never even heard of. I mean, a few of the ones that I get traffic from that I just listed, I have never even heard of.

If you want to check out the search engines you get traffic from, simply go to your Google Analytics, click on “traffic sources” and then “search engines”.

New Sites Get Nice Search Engine Love… Besides Google

One of my newer sites I worked on doesn’t get too much traffic. I think it only gets a few thousands visitors monthly. But the best part of it all is the fact that Google isn’t even the top search engine referrer, it’s actually Yahoo (check out the screenshot below).

Now, I’m sure over time when I build more links, the site gets more popular, etc, Google will once again take over as the top search engine referrer, but since this is a new site, I’m still getting the love with search engine traffic.

Anyways, the point to this post is the fact that there are plenty of ways of getting traffic, especially from search engines. If you’re so committed on working to get a Google Pagerank for your site, its not necessary. I mean, Pagerank or not, you’ll still get love from other search engines besides Google. :D

Too bad DatMoney gets most of its traffic from Google.  Eh, Google does own most of the internet but traffic is traffic so I can’t complain!

For searches that require a decision or purchase, Bing is a much better search tool than Google. However, for simple searches such as recipes, craft ideas, who played in that movie, et cetera, Google just can’t be beat for its simplicity. The new search engine Bing will probably garner its own fan club and maybe even become a household name. But replace Google? I don’t think so.

Many of the larger search engines will have both a directory and spidering search engine, e.g. yahoo.com, google.com, and allow visitors to select which they want to search. Note that many search engines do not have their own search technology and are contracting services from elsewhere. For example, Google’s spider SE is their own, but their directory is and Open Directory; additionally aol.com and netscape.com both use Google’s spider SE for their results.

    You know,
I know anyone would prefer diversification before it gets deindexed. But like you said, traffic is traffic. I wouldn’t mind traffic & using all the means of getting search engine love. But, for some not-so-much-famous search engine, if there is a traffic then optimizing for then would definitely be profitable.

I believe every search engine in the world are working with a similar basic principle but maybe the way they calculate the algorithm differentiate them from each other.

So what I am trying to say is to get on the top we need to post a good content constantly(with good keyword apply), and never stop to build good backlinks(because there are millions others are doing the same). If your contents are good, the available search engine will come to you themselves.

I believe that Yahoo is going to garnish 15% to 25% of related searches based on the “total” amount of searches via Google on a daily basis. This makes searches per day
    based at 15% around 240.

Although I have submit my blog to yahoo free directory, yahoo list those website on their site who pay for that, but google is totaly different, we have to work hard for get organic traffic, so that means we are learning from google. I get most traffic from googl, so you never ever neglect google.

Most of my traffic comes from Google, some from Yahoo and bing seems to be creeping up. I have thought about other search engines and how to get ranked well on them because now and then I get a bit of traffic from the odd one here and there. Getting more traffic from them would only work in my favour.

Though there are many other search engines but your list contains the mostly used ones. Recently Bing was launched by MSN with a promise to give better results but I think even it has failed to reach upto the mark. Google is still the best and the most popular search engine.

If you want my opinion, Google was simply getting too big for its own good. Despite its founders’ “Do no evil” motto, more and more people are getting irritated by Google’s perceived arrogance. It was getting urgent that some serious competitor steps in and re-level the playing field. Will Bing be that competitor? They have already promised that they are out to kill Google. I was nicely surprised to notice that Bing had crawled almost every page on my blog (for 6 months, Google just wouldn’t do it). We all hope that, as it grows, Bing will yield more relevant, more up-to-date search results.

    Get a flat stomach // October 8th, 2009 at 11:26 am

@Prostrate Problems – Contrary to your claim of Bing being faster than Google I must say that Bing inspite of their promise is nowhere near Google. Bing is much slower in indexing a site in compared to Google. I have seen in most of the cases whenever I publish a blog post Google indexes it in about 6hrs max. but Bing takes more than a week to index it. Moreover you can find very poor quality search results in case of Bing.

From my experience, I’ve always had a hard time ranking on Yahoo, in fact for some reason I just don’t understand how Yahoo works, I tend to rank better on Bing, and 2nd is Google for me. But I know others have differing experiences.

    Till then,

    Jean
