It’s always interesting to check out other peoples’ stats for their sites so I figured I’d go over ways you can find out what keywords are my competitors using. Plus, you can also check out what these sites say about your own blog as well.
I’m sure you can analyze your own stats with Google Analytics or something equivalent but getting the inside scoop on other websites can give you a good upper hand.
Honestly, there are tons of different websites that analyze site stats but none of them seem to be fully accurate. But to be fair, I don’t think any site will ever be 100 percent accurate. These sites are meant to be for getting a good idea on what a particular site has to offer. Basically, to get a general idea on what the site brings in with traffic, revenue, etc.
I occasionally like to check out random sites to see what type of traffic they’re getting, how many backlinks they have, where are those backlinks coming from, what keywords they rank high for, etc, because I want to know where I should be at and I like to get ideas off of that type of data.
For instance, if I see a site that is doing great with organic traffic and rank for keywords with low competition, why shouldn’t I test out those waters to see if I can do just as good? And no, it’s not stealing. Most of the time we all have enough room for everyone to compete for.
Plus, it can also help me improve my own site.
Anyways, let’s get to what keywords are your competitors using and how you can find out that info.
Semrush - This is definitely a good website and tool to check out the keywords you rank for, what position, how much traffic that keyword gets monthly, the cost percentage and so on. The bad part is the fact that you have to pay for it if you want extended data.
Personally, I don’t like paying for stuff like this because I don’t really need to analyze too many sites on my own. I just use the free areas which only lists 10 of the keywords per site and the info surrounding that.
KeywordSpy - This is similar to Semrush with the limitation due to needing accounts and paying for it but it works just as good. They actually have a free trial but again, if you don’t want to sign up for anything, just use the free stuff and you can check out the first 10 keywords.
The thing I like about KeywordSpy is the fact that they give you the CPC as well as the actual URL to the post that is getting ranked for that keyword. In addition, they give you the position number you’re in, search results and search volume.
Quantcast - I don’t think Quantcast actually gives you the keywords of each site but it does break down a lot of information about the site. If the site gets enough traffic then it will let you know the estimated monthly traffic, the demographic of your visitors (location, gender, age, nationality) as well as other sites they visit.
I put this on because I know it’ll help you guys individually on your own sites as well.
Compete - I didn’t think Compete gave as much stats but they actually give a pretty decent amount. Unfortunately, its like Alexa, its not very close to being accurate. And it gives you keywords, referral sites and stuff but very limited without an account.
And yes, having a “pro” account requires you to pay monthly.
Those are just a few sites/tools that will help you find keywords and more information on other sites, especially your competitors. There are a lot more and most of them require you to pay (these ones as well) but at least you get to see some stats.

This is a good list and something I use all the time. While none of these are 100% accurate they can help you evaluate a site. I use the SeoBook toolbar for FireFox as these are all built into the toolbar and makes it easy to get the information. You can download it at http://tools.seobook.com/seo-toolbar/
Another one I like which is really part of SEMRush is seopivot.com I don’t use it much for spying on competitors but for 12 bucks you can get a list of where pages on your site rank for certain keywords. You can export it to a spreadsheet and then have a good list of pages you need to build links to or optimize in order to improve your organic search results.

Thank you for your great post. Yes it is really helpful if we see from where our competitor getting backlink and what keyword they are using. Such way we can analyze our deficiency.

I remember being able to view the “source” or html & find out what keywords a specific site is using. Can someone please refresh my memory on this? ~Thanks!
Yes, you will be able to see html by right click on your explorer or chrome browser and select ‘view page source’ option. Anyway Semrush seem like an interesting site to use.
