So, what is Labor Day? Why do we celebrate Labor Day? Well, I decided to go a different route in today’s post simply because tomorrow is Labor Day and since none of us should really be working on that day, I figured I’d at least go over what it is. I mean, it’s the least I could do since it’s one day out of the year that we do not have to work… and most of us get paid for the holiday.
Labor Day is always the first Monday of September. So, September 07, 2009 is this year’s Labor Day.
The definition of Labor Day is as described:
Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
I think a majority of my readers are from the United States so basically we’re all celebrating with a well-deserved day off. And this is why this post comes the day before because I won’t be spending too much time working online on Monday.
Supposedly, the holiday came from Canada out of labor disputes in the “Nine-Hour Movement”. But don’t think the U.S. steals from Canada. ![]()
U.S. celebrated the first Labor Day in September 5, 1882 in the aftermath of the deaths of workers from the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1984 Pullman Strike.
Most people don’t know that. Matter of fact, I didn’t even know that. I was just glad I had the day off of work.
And most people also just look at Labor Day is the last day of the summer to rest and have parades. It’s also a good excuse to have barbecues, fireworks, picnics and all that fun stuff.
So, I hope you guys are able to enjoy the day off. I didn’t mean to bore you guys on this post but with working online also comes a well-deserved day off. And what better excuse to take a day off than to “celebrate Labor Day”, eat junk food, go to parades and rest up for the following day.
Enjoy!

I am a college student right now, and everyone pretty much loves labor day, it’s great because it gives us students a chance to get caught up in our school work, as well as a nice three day weekend. It’s also nice because it generally falls 1-2 weeks after we start the semester, so it gives us the chance to relax since we are still trying to get back into the swing of the heavy course workload of college.

labor day is the day we celebrate for the remembering of the labor movement.
The tradition of celebrating Labor Day as a national holiday is over one hundred years old. From its original conception as a labor union celebration, it has grown to be symbolic of the end of summer activities. It began in 1882 in New York as a parade by the Knights of Columbus to give credit for the contributions to New York life of working class citizens. In 1884, a large parade organized by the Knights to celebrate the working class. The first Monday in September was chosen for the date of the parade, and the Knights decided to hold all future parades on that day. From then on the Knights designated the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

@jewelry making supplies, I don’t think there really is a Labor Day online… I mean pretty much the internet is 24/7 and doesn’t really stop for holidays. If anything labor day is more of a Federal Holiday.
I hope that helped.

Thanks for the informative post on Labor Day. Till now Labor day was just another holiday for me but after reading the post it means a lot for me. Though Labor day is already past this year but next year it will not be a simple holiday for me but a holiday with a meaning. Must also mention that this small swings from the normal postings is quiet refreshing.

I think the concept of labour Day does not apply to the Blogosphere where we work for ourselves. Also given the tough competition online there is no scope at at all to take a day off atleast in the starting stage, as is the case with me. Anyway thanks for explaining the importance of Labor day.
