A lot of people ask me how to pick a niche or that they need to narrow it down to something really specific before they start anything. Although, it is good to have a niche, it’s also not extremely necessary to make money. But for those that are interested in trying to figure out how to pick a niche, let me give you guys a few ideas.
Steal Someone Elses’ Niche Idea
I know some of you guys may think stealing is unethical so let’s just replace the word steal with borrow. See, there are a lot of people with ideas and of course, with a good idea, people want to copy it, right? I mean, how many people do you know who took someone elses’ idea and just made it that much better?
Let me give you an example. Myspace. Facebook. Twitter. Do you think those were the first social networking sites? Definitely not. I’m sure they saw other sites that were similar and just wanted to create something even better. And as far as I know, those are the biggest social networking sites on the internet today.
See? They basically took an idea and just made it even better. So, that’s what we can all do. Though, sometimes it gets too competitive. *cough* Make Money Online niche *cough*
Finding Trends
I know trends are things that are “in”… now. And most of the time they run out and people move on from that trend. But believe it or not, there are a lot of trend niches that will be successful for a long time to come. Of course, you have to find the right one.
If you have no clue on what I’m talking about, try creating a site on American Idol. Technically, that’s a trend. Though, it’s a recurring trend. So, the niche will probably have its down months when the show isn’t on but ask anyone that has an American Idol site or blogs about it and they will tell you they see drastic spikes in traffic as well as earnings.
Plus, you would only have to work on the site for those couple of months the show is on.
Do Your Own Research and Test
Of course, the hardest thing to do is lots and lots of research, especially keyword research. The ultimate goal is to find something hot that people are continually searching for or are extremely interested in with low competition. If people aren’t interested or aren’t searching for it then is the niche really worth it?
There are a lot of exceptions especially if its a unique niche. But then that would require lots of promotion to get people interested in it to begin with.
Pick Something of Interest
John actually brought this up in the comments so I figured I’d add it on here as well. I forgot to mention it but picking a niche that you have knowledge in or are extremely interested in will get you by. Personally, I don’t create a site unless it’s something that interests me.
I have a entrepreneur blog, a movie site, a sex education type site, celebrity sites, I talk about sports, poker, etc. See? All my interests.
Thanks John for bringing it up!
Those are just a few ways on how to pick a niche. A lot of people mention they need to pick a niche before they do anything… well, I’d say just jump into it and see what happens!

I think you should make it clear that you mean ideas and not content. There are far too many people stealing content, re-syndicating content without attribution and blatantly stealing entire sites.
And of course what may work for one person may not work well for another.
This is not going to upset anybody because most of the hot niches are so large that the competition is not that big of a deal. Just find a top marketer and copy their methods.
You missed the most important point. Pick a niche that you have an interest in. Any site will live and die by it’s content. If you have no knowledge and or passion in the subject then you are at a major disadvantage to others.
I always try to find an area that I can add value to and enjoy writting about. As a result my sites get tonees of natural links and free traffic.
I agree with john, nice point!
This is not going to upset anybody because most of the hot niches are so large that the competition is not that big of a deal. Just find a topper and copy their methods. As writer of this blog said :’)
There some great niches out there but they are only great because of low competition and that’s for a good reason. Sometimes you can get pre-occupied searching for the holy grail of niches – visitors surfing with their credit cards and loads of traffic with zero competition.
Often I’ve found that it’s better to just take action and pick a few subjects your interested in then write some good content and see where it goes. You can always optimize for certain keywords later on.
there are already big players on hot niches
Yea try to pick a niche that is not saturated like “Weight Loss” you won’t stand a chance. I agree with do your own research, and you will find the right one for you.
Niche Picking is a bit tricky, but it is a must for any online business. You have to know how to pick top niches in order to make money online. Without a hot niche you will struggle to make an online income. He has define well you can pick your niches.
