This post was requested by one of my subscribers, and although I was answering his questions on Yahoo messenger, he was still interested in learning how to build various backlinks for his site. If you requested, I will do my best to help out!
Anyways, building backlinks to your site isn’t the hardest thing in the world, though, it can take some time to do. Below are a handful of backlink strategies that I have used and every single of them have worked just fine.
1. Social Media and Bookmarking Sites – Besides getting traffic from sites like Digg, SU, etc, most of them have great backlink juice to help you rank in search engines. It doesn’t matter if they are or aren’t dofollow sites, search engines love them
Just incase you only want to submit to the dofollow sites only, here is a list of all the dofollow social bookmarking sites . Also, here’s a quick post on how to submit to 47 social bookmarking sites in 15 minutes to speed up the process.
A warning: Do not spam them because more than likely you will get blocked. Just use them as a backlink to rank for a strong keyword.
2. Let People Do It For You – No, I’m not saying to pay people to build links for you (even though you can if you want to) but rather give them some sort of incentive.
For example, if you have an eBook that requires a password, try making the password your site’s URL (http://www.datmoney.com ) so when they decide to tell everyone else what your password is (via posting on forums, other blogs, etc) you get a backlink simply from that.
Also, a simple contest will get you tons of backlinks if you make it a requirement to write blog posts. See, have people do it for you!
3. Write Great/Interesting/Useful Posts – When I first started blogging, I overlooked this so much. If you write great articles, they will come! And if they like it enough, I’m sure they will help spread the word for you by linking to it from their other blogs, posting it on forums or even submitting to social bookmarking sites for you (cross number 1 and 2 off your list!).
4. Forum Signatures and Threads – If you post on fairly popular forums regularly, I’m sure you have the ability to add links to your signature. Well, those are backlinks to your site. So, if you have 300 total posts and you have your signature enabled, then that means you’re getting 300 backlinks to your site.
Also, just like I mentioned in number 2, you can mention your URL in threads when the time is right. Don’t start dropping links like there’s no tomorrow because more than likely you will get banned from the forum for spamming.
Instead, start a thread that will be useful for people – let’s use Wordpress themes for an example. You should mention the best site’s to get WP themes and link to a few other blogs as well as yours to make it look less spammy.
Not only will this help with backlinks but it will definitely help with getting traffic to your site as well!
5. Blogroll Exchanges – Blogroll exchanges are good but I also heard you don’t get the full backlink juices you should be getting. We want to focus on one-way backlinks, though, I’m sure if people like your blog enough then they will just add you to their blogroll anyways!
If it’s a sitewide link (which it should be) and they publish a new post, that’s an additional backlink to your site. So, if that site has 200 posts, you have 200 backlinks to your site just for being on their blogroll.
6. Blog Commenting – I remember a few months ago that blog commenting on dofollow blogs were a big thing. Well, it still is and it will definitely help you with backlink juices. Of course, the higher the page pagerank, the better it is for you.
And just a heads up, if the site is no-follow but the page is a pagerank 7, I would still comment on that page because you’ll still get some backlink juices that will help you in more ways than one.
Jason a.k.a. TUK wrote an entire post dedicated to that if you’re interested in looking for that post.

7. Use Free Blogs for Great Backlink Juices – Believe it or not, but all the free blogging services have GREAT backlink juices. For instance, if you have a yoursite.wordpress.com blog, well, those get highly ranked in search engines and with a simple link back to your own site, just imagine how it will do for you.
I remember I wrote a quick article on a relatively popular keyword and linked back to one of my blogs and within a few days I got a few thousands visitors coming over from one of those free blogging sites.
If you need some other blogging service providers besides Wordpress, check out these sites below:
- Typepad
- Blogger
- Yahoo 360
- AOL Journals
- Windows Live Spaces
- Xanga
- LiveJournal
- Vox
- MySpace
- Squidoo
There are a lot of other ones that will be very useful but those are just a few off the top of my head. And if you happen to know some people that use those free blogging services, try asking for a simple backlink. They have nothing to lose because they’re using a FREE blogging service.
8. Article Submission – I haven’t been doing article submissions for quite sometime but I heard it’s a great way to get free links as well as good traffic. Of course, the downfall to that is the fact that you need to write original content that have never been published before.
But then again, if you have ghostwriters that charge less just a few dollars to write one, then it’s perfect!
9. Blog and RSS Directory Submission – It’s just as simple as entering your blog information into blog and RSS directories. It may be time consuming but just create a word document and write out the basic info of your site (name, description, category, etc) and you can just copy and paste it.
You can pay people to submit to hundreds of directories for you at a cheap price but someone told me it’s just not worth it.
Here is a list of RSS and Blog Directories to submit to.
10. Guest Posting – Guest posting is easy to gain new readers, get traffic and get that permanent backlink to your site. There are tons of people willing to guest post and accept guest posts so take your stab at it.
Plus, like I said, if you have a good ghostwriter, all the work is done for you already!
I’m sure there are a lot of other ways to build links to your site but here are 10 good ways that have helped me. Plus, all of these are ways you can do it by yourself but maybe more importantly for some of you guys, they are all FREE methods of building links.

Great tips! Article submissions are really good — and the SEs love them! Like ezinearticles.com and searchwarp.com (got hits after a couple hours on that one). I haven’t had much luck with Squidoo, though, which is disappointing because it’s such a cool concept and it’s beautiful, too.

Excellent article on building backlinks for free especially with Googles stamp down on paid links.
Nice list Jason
I think a lot of people don’t take half of these things into consideration when they start blogging. I always seem toforget about doing the free blog thing to add some link juice to my blog.
And now I know there is no shortcut to build great sites
Thanks for your great tips Jay.
Great ways to build backlinks, but it takes a lot more work than anyone can possibly imagine. When I owned bloggin-ads, it took about 10 months to just build about 30 to 35,000 backlinks. It goes away quick too, so you have to be consistent. Your best bet is to do permanent dofollow link exchanges.

Great tips! Forum commenting seems to be quite an effective way of building links, as you can link it using the relevant keywords for your site. I’m getting into blog commenting, as I heard it’s quite effective. The only with blog commenting is that most blogs don’t allow you to use keywords as names, but there’s still link juice in it.
Sweet post. Lots of additional stuff/links to read in the a.m.
Excellent post. I have used a few free sites to create links to my site like ebay, blogger, Squidoo so this list you provide would be good resource that I can use. Thanks for sharing.

WOW I love the URL idea for the password!
Do you periodically update the list of do follow social sites? Due to the constant idiocy of spammers, more and more of them are switching to no follow.

Heres a tip that helps me submit to many sites quickly. Download MemoKeys its fantastic: http://www.download.com/MemoKeys-II-Lite-Edition/3000-2079_4-10162464.html
It allows you to assign a piece of text to a “hotkey”. So you could assign your email address, website url and username/password etc…. Saves keep typing them in everytime you go to a site – just use a hotkey!
Backlinks might have worked ok in the past, but Mr Google changed the rules again. So it will take some time to figure out if it has any impact on backlinks.
And now I know there is no shortcut to build great sites
