Would You Sell Your Site or Blog if the Price was Right?

The Price is Right

I think I asked this question before but I’ll ask it again, "would you sell your site or blog?" I know most of you guys would say no, especially those of you who don’t blog for money or whatever but everyone has a price. And if you’re saying you don’t have a price for your blog or site, well, I’m not going to be the one that calls you a liar. :P But would you sell your blog if the price was right?

*In a Bob Barker voice* Come on dddoooowwwwnnnn! (I know Drew Carey’s the new host but it’s not the same! lol)

Just recently, I was just "shopping" my blog around to see how much it was worth. I actually had a couple of people who expressed interest which was somewhat of a shock to me. But there was one particular person who said they was interested in my entrepreneur site, at first, but they came up with an excuse that they find it hard finding sponsors and advertisers for the Make Money Online niche so they passed.

Honestly, I think that was just an excuse because it’s not hard finding people who want to advertise on your site. Matter of fact, my 125×125 ad spots are currently sold out and now I have a couple of people waiting. On top of that, the MMO niche may be oversaturated but that gives more of a reason that advertisers and sponsors are easy to find.

And by the way, I stopped considering this a MMO blog a while ago.

Anyways, I think they were using that as an excuse to turn me down gently instead of coming out and saying "Dude, your entrepreneur blog sucks!"

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t plan on selling this blog but this all comes back to my original question "would you sell your blog if the price was right?" And yes, I have a price in mind and I think I would be stupid if I didn’t take the offer I have envisioned.

Whether you consider your site or blog a business or a personal venture, once you start getting paid to manage the site it becomes a business.

I was having a discussion with my girlfriend the other day and she told me the owner of her jobs company just sold it. They sold it for somewhere close to the $100 million mark or something around that. I mentioned its a business and when it comes down to it, if the price is right then the smart thing to do would be to sell it.

Of course, you do need to look at all aspects before doing so.

First, is it really worth selling your site? For instance, if you see potential in your site and you’re currently making X amount each month but you feel you can make a lot more, you might not want to sell it. I remember Jason of Theuniversitykid was offered $6,000 a while back and he turned it down. After he did, all his stats shot up and now he doesn’t even try to make money from that blog, yet, he still manages to.

Can you continue to build off your success? Again, if you make money from your site, you have to treat your blog somewhat like a business. And if you don’t think you can continue or build off your current success, you should treat it like the stock market and "sell, sell, sell!"

We all have up and down months but you shouldn’t try to sell just because you’re having a down month.

The list of aspects can go on and on but it all depends on each persons view. I mean, what if someone offered you tons of money for your blog but your domain name was your full name? I know some people wouldn’t want to lose that.

I’m not going to come up with an excuse and say "oh, I’m in debt and I need to pay it off so that’s why I’m selling" or "I can’t find the time to manage this blog anymore so I’m selling" but I can tell you that I personally do have a price. Oh, and I do have debt to pay off and just like anyone else, I need money too.

But my question is "would you sell your blog if the price was right? If so, what would be that price (realistically)?" And think about all the different aspects before you make the decision, I am a little curious.

Yes. No question. Everyone has a price tag. The point is that most often people have inflated price tags when judging their own stuff.

I would sell my blog fast as lightning for the right money, or an hour with a victorias secret model. (ok, all I need is like 2 minutes, and most of that is the undressing before and dressing after.

Great post…I have been trying to learn more on the “flippin’ site” stuff. I want to sell one of my sites simply because I just don’t know what to write about on it to keep the readers coming. I have a site that is two and a half months old and already reaching 500 visitors a month (I think that’s good?). Uniques are going up every month too. 3 of every 4 add my site to their favorites and the stats are looking really promising. The only problem is, I don’t know what to write to keep it interesting.

That is a hard question. I think if someone has lost interest in their blog, they might as well sell it if they can instead of letting it sit there.

Now, I would not sell the WAHM Blog, but I do have a few others I would sell in a minute if the price was right!

I think everyone has a price. The question is will someone willing to pay that price step forward? In most cases they won’t.

    Hi, Jay:
That is a great question. And one i think bloggers should be asking, because the blog marketplace is super hot right now.

Lots of people are jumping on the blog bandwagon, and those who are smart, are NOT wanting to start from scratch. They want a blog that is ready to go.

So many are looking at (existing blogs) to acquire them. Not to mention successful blogs.

To answer your question, YES. I made the mistake (last year) of creating a series of blogs all at the same time, and now i’m drowning in blogs. So i’m selling. There are a few i don’t plan on selling (just yet). But the others are going going, gone.

    Good question.

I recently sold my flagship blog, because i was bored….. and i got pretty good money for it… I could have held onto it for another 3 months and probably got more, but I was bored with it, and wanted to move onto other things….

In other news… Bob Barker didn’t say “Come on down….” but i’ll forgive you for that…..

No More Compromise // September 14th, 2008 at 2:57 am

It depends. Some of my sites I don’t think I would ever sell – certain other ones I definately would. I tend to attack a niche with a whole network of sites that work together so if I sold one of them off, the others would subsequently be weaker so in that case I might look to sell the whole network. I have also discussed with a few buyers in the past on selling some sites but I try to set my sites up to run almost on autopilot – I have sites I literally haven’t touched in 2 years that still make money. So if someone offers me, say, 5 times the monthky profit, it’s not too tempting because I will get that with zero effort. The sites I would sell are the ones where I havr to put a lot of effort in each month to keep them earning.

Well, if someone wants to buy my blog (which I doubt), I will sell it if the price is right. I think no one wants to buy newly created blog right.

If I have no time blogging, then of course, I wil sell my blog but if I still enjoy posting with it and networking with other bloggers, then I will not definitely sell it.

Don’t know if I’d be able to. I enjoy building websites and blogging. If my main purpose was to build the site to be flipped, then of course. But after putting so much work into it, I don’t know. It’d have to be a very attractive offer.

This may be a little off topic but I miss Bob Barker on the Price is Right. Drew Carey just looks really… strange out there. It was always funny with Bob as people would practically knock him over. Hilarious.

Looking to start up my own blog. Wouldn’t be interesting in purchasing one though. There is an obvious market out there though. Thanks for posting this! :)

Selling a blog depends on what type of blog it is, and I’m not talking about niche websites. What I am talking about is this: is the blog a flagship blog, or was it made to be flipped? If it’s a flagship blog, it is much much harder for the owner to want to sell it. I know this because there are many times when I just want to sell SlyVisions, but decided that it would not be a good idea. If you’re selling blogs that were made to be sold, then it is much easier to sell it at any price.

It really depend on what website I have. If it’s a site that has a lot of potential and will make money for me in the long-term then I wouldn’t sell it even if it means I have to borrow money for the time-being to cover the short-term costs.
