Switching Out of the MMO Niche Will Probably Make You More Money

300 the movie and Make money online blogs

I can’t tell you how many times I preach not to get into the Make Money Online niche because more than likely you won’t make a lot of money. Plus, we know the Make Money Online niche is oversaturated… a LOT!

But if you already a site dedicated to it, built up the stats for your site and still manage to not make any money, well, you don’t need to start a brand new site, just convert it to a generic blog. And believe me, a majority of MMO blogs should do this and I will guarantee that you make more money simply by blogging.

Yes, simply by blogging. And I know what you’re thinking, “well, everyone comes to my site because they are expecting tips on how to make money. Plus, I spent so much time on this blog!”

Now, if you have a successful MMO blog, I wouldn’t suggest switching anything. For instance, if you make at least a few hundred dollars a month, have at least a few hundred subscribers, etc then you’re probably on the right path. If you do not , I would suggest switching that blog to a generic blog where you will and can blog about anything and everything. Trust me, I know a few people who have done it and now they make $x,xxx by doing so.

Here’s what you should do (assuming your blog is indexed in search engines, you have a bunch of backlinks to your site and you’re willing to take this step in converting your MMO blog):

1. Warn your readers that you’re converting and give them the real reason. If you’re converting, more than likely you don’t have more than 100 or 200 subscribers to begin with so they should understand. You may lose “readers” but then again you could gain a whole lot more and make a lot more money while you’re at it. (No need to be a faker anymore! Woohoo!)

2. Switch your layout, your tagline, your keywords, etc.

3. Blog about anything and everything but just keep blogging. You can do keyword research and I wrote a post on it so you can check it out. But you can also just go to Google Trends and see what’s hot and just write about it.

The key here is that your blog is already pretty well indexed in search engines and if you have a Pagerank, that’s even better. Believe it or not, the more you blog, the more you can make.

So, how do you actually make money by switching to this new generic blog?

You can monetize however you want but what has worked for me and a few people I know is Google Adsense. Personally, I currently make a couple hundred from Adsense a month but I just joined forces with someone else who currently makes a few hundred a day by doing this. So, I will get back to you once I get started with the collaboration.

I know some people aren’t fans of Adsense but believe me, it actually pays out a lot if you know what you’re doing.

So, not only will you be able to stay up with the current events and trends, you can blog about anything and everything you like and probably make more money than you would have with your MMO blog.

Now, there’s no need to force out posts, try to copy all these other MMO blogs and more importantly, you can actually enjoy blogging once again! (And I know some of you MMO bloggers are starting to feel the affects of it.)

And don’t worry, I’m not switching this blog… I already have a generic blog dedicated for this purpose!

it does seem to be a pretty crowded niche. and it doesn’t help that the bloggers in it tend to already know a lot about seo. and after a while, i can imagine running out of fresh new things to talk about.

Kouji - And it’s unfortunate that most of them don’t actually make money because of that same reason. I know a few people who switched their MMO blogs over to a generic blog and get TONS of traffic and Adsense clicks.

Are you saying to not make a MMO blog? Or just not get into making money online at all? Or is this just saying, don’t make a MMO BLOG, make a different blog.

The over saturation is a simple fact of people go where they “think” they will make money, the problem is they only “think” about what others are doing, IE, someone says I just made 30K a month blogging about corn syrup then there would be a huge rush of corn syrup blogs. Sad. Blog about what drives you.

Buddy - I’m saying NOT to make a MMO blog especially if you don’t make money online… and like BlogSavvy said, you should blog about what drives you… or at least the latest trends! :D

Oh, I thought this was the introduction of your announcement of switching.
Why not leave one’s MMO blog hibernating and create a new project, and maybe get back to MMO once in a while, or after some period of looking into new huge MM opportunities (if these will raise at all any time soon).

Do you have a lot of other blogs? I agree with you in that you don’t have to have an MMO blog to MMO! If you find a niche that will bring traffic to your blog and retain readers, then your blog can be successful, too.
    Great post!

jay - interesting. i guess that readers by now already might have their favorite mmo blogs to visit, so it’s that much more difficult for new entrants to do something to capture readers’ attention. not impossible, just difficult, and as you pointed out, maybe not as worth it at this point.

Rebecca - Thanks for commenting. Yes, I do a handful of blogs as well as html static sites. :D

Trent - Those Adsense ads have been here for months lol. I’m not converting my blog into a random “talk about anything and everything” blog. I have iBlogtoBlog.com for that. :P

Kouji - There are actually some great MMO blogs or entrepreneur sites but too many people try to pretend which is never a good thing.

I agree you could change, but if your MMO blog is making a small amount of money, could you not just make a post about your new blog and then keep 2 blogs on the go. Then some of the subscribers can switch.

Not sure but just an idea?

Intriguing stuff Jay. I agree the MMO niche is pretty overcrowded right now but it’s still possible for a blog with a unique touch to become the next big-thing in the MMO scene.

I totally agree with you about following your heart rather than getting bored faking it.

There are a lot of MMO blogs out there and the competition is very tight. Sounds like a cool idea, too bad my blog is still new and no pagerank yet. Maybe in the future, I will consider your trick ;0

    Thanks Jay.

even though the MMO is oversaturated but still you can make even you have MMO or not. i think its depends on you as a blogger on how to monetize your blog.

It’s nice to see someone write about this. It always seemed to me as if the blogs about making money online only encouraged more blogs about making money online.

My guess is very few actually make any substatial money.

It’s a great advice. The thing is that you should probably start off with MMO niche first. Once you get a decent income stream going from your products then look to diversify.
