Q&A Session: Answers Time!

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 | Blogging - MISC, Other/Random with

I appreciate everyone who took the time to ask a question (or two) and if you know me, I always like helping out when I can and if people are still interested in this Q&A here, then I’ll continue to do it. Don’t worry, you guys will continue to get backlinks if you ask as well!

Before I get into the Q&A, I asked if people liked the NFL and there was something I’m stirring up. Well, I decided that I’m going to do an NFL Picks Challenge each week. It’s simple, each week we pick who will win and we start keeping track. At the end of the week, the person with the best record will get the prize.

For instance, for Week 3, I was 10-5 in picking the correct teams to win. Do you think you can beat me (and others)? Well, if so, leave a comment here or e-mail and I will get this set up.

Anyways, let’s get to the Q&A!

Barbara Bakers asks: What are the steps needed when considering a site flip? or rather, when you decide it’s time to sell a site you don’t really work on?

Well, the things to consider for a site flip should include things like monthly revenue, RSS Feed subscribers, traffic, organic traffic, backlinks, pages indexed, pagerank, etc. Basically, anything you want for your site, other people want it as well.

The steps, well, it all depends. Most people just care about how much revenue that site makes monthly. So, if you consider selling a site, make sure you get revenue and have proofs of it. There are people willing to pay anywhere between 6 to 24 times the monthly revenue of the site. But generally, it’s 10 times the monthly amount.

SuiteJ asks: What site do you play poker on (assuming you play online) and at what level? I have fallen off the past few months (too busy), but I might try and find you when I’m back on, if you still play.

I used to play at Pokerstars but I stopped and I switched to FullTiltPoker. If you decide to get back into playing online, sign up through my referral link! Just click here and when they ask for a referral code just type in “datmoney” and I’ll see your username and I’ll hit you up if I see you on.

But I usually play at the $0.10/$0.25 or $0.25/$0.50 CAP NL tables. I also play sit&go tourneys as well and if I’m feeling cheap, I’ll play at the $0.05/$0.10 tables. Of course, I’m usually playing at three tables at once. :D

Matt asks: I’ve seen on your blog that you use adsense to make money, and I want to do the same thing myself. Your goal of $3000 a month sounds too good to be true but if I can do the same it would be great. Do you have any real advice for me on my own blog?

Matt, most of my adsense earnings come from other blogs or sites that I own. I don’t make too much from Adsense on this particular blog. As for the $3,000/month goal, well, that’s from different revenue sources not just from Adsense.

I checked out your blog and there isn’t much there. E-mail me or add me on instant messenger if you want to discuss things.

Sell Porn Make Money asks: Did you pay for the theme you are using in your flip contest, or did someone comp that for you?

In our site flipping contest, I was unfortunate enough to be in the group I’m in. Girish, our team leader, has been great! But to answer your question, we have a few site flippers in our group so they had the license to those revolution themes so we just used that.

Brad Blogging asks: Why don’t you invest money into a blog theme that is originally created for you? Of course this does the job, but It’s used by so many other people, am I wrong?

I honestly considered an original theme but decided against it only because I’m too lazy to hire someone, work with them on adjusting everything to fit my needs and also too cheap to pay for it.
When it comes down to it, you can have the nicest design on your blog but people come to it for the content. That’s another reason why, I rather focus on content than the luxury stuff.

Sherry asks: I am having problem to access my blogs in blogger dot com.

Well, if it’s the blog you just linked here, it seems to work fine for me. Also, that type of question should be sent to Google support groups. :D

Shawal asks: How do I transfer the new domain to my old hosting so that I can make a new blog from that domain, a step by step guide is much appreciated.

Well, first, when you login into your GoDaddy account, all you want to do is change the “nameservers” to point to your hosting. You hosting company should have provided you with that info.
Once you do this, it all depends on how your hosting company is set up. If you have cpanel, then go to “Add-on domains” and type in your new domain name. Keep in mind, you have to complete that first step before proceeding with this.

If you’re using WP platform, you also have to set up a MySQL database for it as well. There should be an option for that in your cpanel and that’s where you take the info to plug into your WP-config.php file.

I think that’s the basics of it. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Charles asks: How do you earn from blogging?

My response is: “Shouldn’t you already know? You have a MMO/blogging tips blog!”

Wait, are you asking how I make money from blogging? Well, I sell private ad spots, do affiliate links and work with Adsense. I guess that sums it up for me!

Steve asks: When you are starting a new blog do you start out with a free wordpress theme or should you pay the money and get one made?

It depends. Honestly, I would start with a free WP theme because it’s the content people want, not the looks of your blog. You also never need to pay to have one made for you unless you really want to. It’s just like any other investment and if you feel that is one, go for it.

But just remember, people are going to your site for the content and if you’re just starting out you should NOT pay for an original theme. Just look at the theme I’m using, it’s a free one and I’m doing just fine.

ZK@WebTrafficROI asks: Apart from commenting on blogs and in forums what are the other ways of getting traffic to your site

Are you asking how I get traffic to DatMoney or in general? It all depends for me. With DatMoney, I’ve been lazy and haven’t done anything much. I don’t comment for traffic, I comment if I have something to say. As for forums, I don’t use that as much as I used to.

But I did some SEO and get a majority of my current traffic from there. Occasionally, people submit some of my articles to social bookmarking and media sites and I get traffic from that too.
Anyways, I don’t promote this blog like I should be. That may change soon.

Barry asks: Jay, my personal blog has a PR3 (I know PR isn’t everything, but it does mean the search engines hit it). Should I consider monetizing this blog with adsense? If I do - does that change anything with search engines?

Sure, if it’s a personal blog, why not toss some Adsense ads on there. And no, that does not change anything in search engines. It should only increase your income! :D

Dilson Decano asks: Hi Jay, does google will penalize your Google PR if you do paid blogging? If you are in paid blogging, what should you do to avoid google slap your google PR?

Yes, they do. There are different ways of avoiding being slapped by the big G. First, you can simply avoid doing paid reviews in general… of course, that won’t help you. You can also just put the rel=”nofollow” attribute within those links you include in the post. Lastly, you can just avoid mentioning it’s a paid review in the first place.

Wendy asks: The only one I can think of for now is where is the best location to place Google ads?

Above the fold. But since I’m assuming you’re talking about Adsense on blogs, I’d say square boxes right above the post title.

Matthew asks: Since you’ve done some contests for Market Leverage, do you feel more “loyal” to them? Like if another affiliate network came along offering you more, would you dump ML? You mention often that new bloggers shouldn’t start an MMO blog. What kind of blog would you personally recommend someone starting?

I don’t feel loyal to any company because they offer me stuff, I feel loyal when they actually take the time to work with me, be friendly, etc. ML crew has gone above and beyond any other affiliate company I have seen.

Also, why would I dump ML? There’s enough Jay to go around! :P

For your next question, it depends. I would say create a generic blog that you can blog about anything but that’s for an Adsense earning perspective. But I would consider a travel blog as well.

Contest Live asks: How important has contests played into your success as a blogger?

I wouldn’t say it’s been a huge factor into my small amount of success. Yeah, it’s nice and everything but its only temporary traffic, temporary RSS Feed subscribers, temporary stats, etc.
If I’m looking for something quick and short term, then it’s okay but I’m not a huge fan of them.

It All Free Online asks: How do you market your custom banner designs? How do you basically get people to buy them from you? Do you have a portfolio etc?

I held a promotion back in January that took off and that’s how I started getting my feet wet in banner designs. Also, that’s how I created my portfolio so quickly.

I used to do various promotion methods to get customers but I stopped doing that because I’m leaning away from the banner designs. Though, people continue to contact me by themselves because they heard good things from other people or they searched for people who design banners through search engines and manage to get on my site.

Jason asks: Which do you think is a better blogger, The University Kid or Jason Pereira?

Honestly, I have never heard of either one of them so I wouldn’t know. :P

Angie asks: Which one do you think is better…

Making a whole bunch of half ass websites and sticking ad’s in them and getting a decent amount of traffic on each to make some extra cash or building a few great websites with great traffic and you could potentially sell for more?

I think I would have to choose quantity on this one. I would love to make great websites and stuff but it also takes a lot more time and dedication to maintain.

Making a bunch of half ass sites and plugging ads only takes an hour to create and you basically don’t have to do anything after that. If I do that 100 times I may not need to do anything after.

So, my answer is I would (and do) make half ass sites for the extra cash because it’s easy. Although, I do think I have a few great sites including this one!

Thank you to everyone that took time to ask questions, I really appreciate it. I hope next time I get more questions!
