We all know Google basically owns the World Wide Web, at least a majority of it but that doesn’t mean you can’t get traffic from other search engines.
I know some you guys live by Google and will probably die by Google but seriously, you can actually get great traffic from smaller search engines. I see so many people worrying so much about their Pagerank and how it can drastically affect their search engine results. Well, let me tell you, it doesn’t have the type of impact you may think.
I’ll give you an example. I built a niche HTML site just so I can rank high in a specific keyword, have a one time setup and basically do nothing else while generating traffic and revenue at the same time. My site actually wasn’t even indexed in Google search engines but I decided not to let that hold me back so I started building links for that site.
After a few days, my site still wasn’t indexed in Google but yet I was getting pretty steady traffic flowing in and I started seeing my Adsense increase and stay steady for that span. Of course, I was curious as hell so I checked where all my traffic was coming in from and besides certain social bookmarking sites, a large majority of traffic was coming from Yahoo, MSN and even some smaller search engines I never even heard of before.
See, I may not have been indexed in Google but because I started to build links to that site, it was picked up by tons of other search engines. I even ranked on the first page on a bunch of them for the keyword I was targeting which is what has been helping me out.
I just checked earlier today and this specific HTML site I mentioned has a few pages finally indexed with Google but not the entire site, just yet.
I know a lot of you guys breathe and live Google but you just have to remember there are plenty of alternatives. I didn’t expect to get any search engine traffic with my niche HTML site since it wasn’t indexed with the big G, but I was proven wrong.
And honestly, I’m glad I was proven wrong this time!
So, if you can’t seem to rank on the first page of a popular keyword with Google, don’t stop building links because the more links you have the more it will help you with other search engines.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up on the first page of the keyword of your choice with every single search engine out there! You’d be amazed…

There are more tips on SEO for google than any other search engine on the net. So people are not that familiar with the rules of other search engines.

That is true, even though Google is a web giant they are not the entire Web. I must admit though that most of my search engine traffic comes from Google. I am curious, did you do anything in particular to get a good steady flow of traffic from other sources besides Google?
Glad to hear you are getting some organic traffic from the smaller search engines. I’m lucky if I get 10 visitors a month from the smaller search engines. You must have hit the sweet spot with your onpage SEO.
Hey man this is good news..I’ve never paid attention to some of the ones on your chart, and there are more than three I am seeing for the first time…good point to keep building the links. Keep makin Dat Moneeeey
I learned that as well while going over my analytics. It seems there are a lot of other engines out there giving me some serious love…thanks for sharing.

I am beginner and not doing any special SEO for Google or for any other search engines. I only put sitemaps in place and submitted to Google and Yahoo.
Still my Google traffic is times larger than others.

i agree to this.. i saw this at work time after time now. at first i was wondering why my adsense has been having constant flow of cash earning while a particular post is not yet pretty indexed by Google. My wordpress stat plugin also does not show any particular access thru Google SERP, but still i was earning. But then I agree why most people seem to live so hard with Google because of its being the search engine giant.
I agree with that. My company (small company) site is a html site (very old fashion look). I build quite a bit link to local directories. So I got reasonable traffic. Or I will creat the traffic to inform my old customers about new service (or promotion) by direct mail or email and left a link to my company web.
How I know I have traffic? I got job quote enquires! Usually small jobs. Business is business!
Axioblogger – I think the same general rules apply to any search engine when it comes to SEO.
Gerri – Don’t get me wrong, most of my search engine traffic comes from Google too but in my example, my HTML wasn’t even indexed there yet but I was getting traffic from other search engines because I built links for that site. Basically, I just built links for my keyword just like any other SEO technique.
Free Directories – I think it’s all about building links and letting all search engines crawl your site. I actually get a lot of Yahoo traffic for a few of my sites.
MsTrisBeats – Yeah, nothing special, just build links and let those search engines crawl your site. It’s as simple as adjusting your robots.txt.
Teasa – I’m sure you build links for your website just as you would specifically for Google so you’ll definitely get the other search engine juices!
BlogSavvy – On that image I have, those are just a few… there are TONS more that all of us don’t even know about.
Rarst – Google does own like half (I think more) of the webs daily searches so that’s probably why everyone gets the most from them. Just build links and they will come!
Dimaks – Google does own the web… they buy almost every big site I know! And people live hard by them because if you piss them off, well, good luck on doing anything lol!
Andy T – Don’t worry, I have some old school lookin’ html sites too lol. But congrats o nthe job quote enquires! Business is business and money is money, if it works it works and that’s all that matters!

Yea, I’m one of the dependable-to-google type of person. I guess I might move on to another sources from now, quite dangerous to put all the eggs in the same basket
There must be different techniques for getting high in the SERPS on each search engine so what do you do differently to get to the top of Yahoo instead of Google?
Surely there’s not that many things you can do differently in terms of on page seo and link building? If you aim for the top of Google and reach it then chances are you’ll get to the top of the others as Google is more competitive?? I don’t know, I’m just thinking aloud here.

What do you do differently to get to the top of different search engines?
Surely you do the same thing to get to the top of Yahoo as you to for Google? What different techniques are there for each search engine?
If you get to the top of Google which is the most competitive then surely you’ll be somewhere near the top for the rest?

Surprisingly, I’m getting a few visitors from Ask, Yahoo, and even Comcast’s search engine. They really do bring in good traffic, almost as good as Google.
All search engines useful in getting visitors for website. But Google is best, So most people trying this. I sumbmitted my website to google, yahoo, msn search engines. My webpages indexed in google, yahoo search engines but till now i am waiting for indexing in msn. Till date I am doing optimization just for google but now I will try other search engines also.
This post is leading me to another aspect of search engine optimization.

I agree with you on that. It is most likely that people will be more concerned by getting on the first page of google and forget about the search engines. I admit I have done that too, but like you said, the other search engines can bring in good traffic too. Great post.

Other search engines like Yahoo and MSN can also provide good traffic but the problem is higher number of Internet users use Google thus “More search engine users means more traffic for you if you know how to get the right traffic.”
Thanks for these tips.
Google definitely brings the most traffic. But I’ve heard that MSN and Yahoo brings quality traffic that converts better.
