Okay, what in the hell is up with Akismet? I mean, this spam filter just isn’t working like it’s supposed to be and it’s getting rather annoying.

Now, all of us Wordpress users know Akismet is a spam filter which is supposed to filter actual spam. Now, I understand it’s not perfect because we will all occasionally catch a regular legit comment in the spam filter. And yes, I do occasionally check to make sure some legit comments are sucked in there because I do appreciate comments from my readers. But recently, Akismet just hasn’t been meeting expectations.

Besides catching occasional legit comments filtered into the spam section, it does the opposite. It lets a TON of real spam, particularly porn spam, get through like it’s a regular comment.

Again, I understand once in a while but when porn comments that are obviously spam are getting through 10+ times a day, then that’s a problem.

Now, personally, whenever someone comments I get an e-mail letting me know I got a new response but it’s starting to get annoying when I’m getting double spammed when all these porn comments are getting through.

What am I supposed to think when it says “have hot sex porn has left a new comment on this post.”

And if you guys ever pay attention, a bunch of times when I’m not around to check these things you’ll see those porn comments on the “recent comments” widget on my sidebar. I try to get rid of it ASAP but there needs to be something done.

Anyone have suggestions? Akismet spam filter just isn’t filtering all this spam!

For the record, I was going to post something else but I had to get this off my chest. Spam is so annoying!

good post i like your site is very good!!!!

Hehe just joking. Akismet works fine my end, you could try other solutions (Spam Karma…) if it continues to tank or just ban the IPs if they come from the same place. :)

Well, I know that I post here alot as I am officially the “top commentator” but I don’t plug anything but my blog here… and the occasional drunk asian midget porn, but that is top quality stuff.

Just don’t ban me, as I am also a satisfied client of your design work :)

Creating - I’m glad I’m not the only one then!

Jason - LOL! You ass, I was just about to report you as spam LMAO! But a few hours after I wrote this post I got three more porn comments that got through (excluding yours :P ) But I don’t think the comments come from the same place but I’ll pay more attention to the IPs… thanks!

I had to make the choice between keeping my Top Commentator list or moderating all first time commentators. I decided to moderate all first timers. This has worked OK although I would like to have more options on it like not moderating someone who doesn’t post a website link or put a link in their comment.

The automated spam attack seems to be from a new blackhat tool. It uses proxies and random email addresses to avoid Akismet for a while.

I have had a little trouble with Askimet lately, mostly it has been that it spams good comments and a few different language ones are getting through. They have all these weird symbols and I have no idea what they mean.

I haven’t had much problem with Askimet, though on some occasions it has caught legit comments with suspicious keywords.

I have one or two regular readers who are very active on my blog but their comments always got askimeted till this very day.

I think “comment moderation” is the only way to get away with spam comments. Even though it is a manual way, at least you can be so sure that you only approve the valid comments.

I don’t use Akismet because it is not for Blogger. I just enabled the Comment Moderation feature so I will reject those what I see as spam comments. I also heard a lot of bad feedback from bloggers using Akismet, that it see legal comments as spam.
