This is exactly what I have been doing quite often recently and not only it helps to bring in the traffic if the pingback is allowed, my effort is very much appreciated and reciprocated by those I link to. So it’s kind of a win-win thing.

Though I haven’t been the first pingbacker before, I certainly agree with your last tip.
