Wow, Another A-List Blog Going for Sale!

Friday, April 11th, 2008 | Blogging - MISC, Make Money Online, Other/Random with

Damn, this must be the month, huh? Last month was March Madness for Contests so this month must be April Madness for Blog/Site Sales! I’m sure selling sites and blogs are just an everyday part of this business/internet world of ours but damn, I’m seeing so many blogs go!

Hey, like I said, April must be that month. It was definitely a coincidence that I wrote about “Would you sell a permanent ad on your blog for $1,000″ and “Are you a sell out if you were to sell your blog?” in the same month as blogs going for sale.

I mentioned before that I saw this guy sell this PR7 blog for $65,000 within the past week or so, which is pretty insane. Then I saw a webmaster forum putting their forum up for sale starting at $65,000 and now, the one and only, Mr. John Cow of johncow.com is packing up his things and moving… literally.

john cow blog for sale

He’s got his personal life to worry about right now and he’s going to pack his stuff and move continents. Seriously. He’s packing up his belongings and shipping them over from Europe to Australia, where Mr. Rowse of Problogger.net lives.I actually found out that Cow was interested in selling about a week or two ago because I saw him shopping his blog around in the DP forums, but I didn’t think he was serious. Well, I guess I was wrong, he is.

He was encouraging people to help him find a buyer by offering 5% of the total amount sold. And the starting bid was $25,000. That means you could potentially make $1,250 or more just by referring a seller to him. If you don’t believe me, check out his most recent post here.

I guess that’s probably the reason why he didn’t respond back when I contacted him to be a sponsor for my upcoming contest - he’s selling his freakin’ blog! Dammit!

But here’s the inside scoop… rumor has it that someone already bought it for $50,000 and they’re just working out the details (payment, transferring websites, etc). Did I mention for $50,000 already on the same day he made it official that he was selling?!

Update: I guess the person who made the bid backed out.  Thanks for the heads up Jason!  So, if you’re reading this and you’re interested in buying his site, make sure you tell them that Jay of DatMoney.com sent you!

Well, congratulations to Mr. John Cow, I’m sure he’s going to be missed and I’m also sure we’ll all see him through his online ventures once again. I mean, he’s already $50,000 richer and I’m sure he’s going to use that to invest wisely. Or buy a new entertainment system and get beat in Xbox live. Yup, I challenge you! Wait, no, I take that back.

On a side note: I hope you guys come back soon as I’ll be posting the new contest that you definitely don’t want to miss out on!

Hehe Jay, don’t tell me you are tempted to sell this blog too? Could be worth up to $15K maybe?

Bobby - I doubt my site is worth $15K and if someone was willing to buy it for that amount, I would say “SOLD!” LOL!

My bud at InternetBabel.com has also put his up for sale - it is at a similar size to yours.

Will be interesting to see how much it sells for :)

Btw, the BINner at Cow backed out.

Jason - How much is he starting the bid off at? And I can’t believe the BINner backed down! Cow must be kinda annoyed, huh?

Tamera - Well, it’s just his time to sell it. But I guess the sale didn’t go through, according to Jason. Well, I’m sure it’ll get bought out soon enough.

Current bid for Internet Babel is $1,000.

Blueverse.com also went on sale, fairly large - current bid, $1,100.

Last, Gasmoney.net is up for grabs, opening bid $1,000, no takers.

Jay, I’ll *say* your site is worth $15k, but I won’t buy it. I don’t have the money, for one thing. ;-)

I could see it becoming worth more than that in time. You’ve got a pretty good presence, people know you exist, and you have lots of thought-provoking articles. Not too shabby.

5k is all, once the original author leaves it changes the landscape.

I think fifty large once is a silly price for that blog - especially considering that only brings in two and a half grand a month. Assuming the purchaser even manage to keep that up (and let’s face it - that won’t happen without work), it’s going to take them twenty whole months to break even. The blog has a usable gimmick, but that gimmick also depends on someone else; John Chow. What happens to John Chow (and also his competition) greatly affects the value of the Cow site. The long term value of that domain name…. Pffftt. Bad purchase, IMO. You could have spent that much money so much more wisely on something else (I did work as an investment banker for a couple of years, so I’m not completely clueless when it comes to investing in things). I guess whoever bought it did so because they thought it was a fun site that they’d have fun working with. At least, that’s the only justification I can see for paying that kind of money for the thing.

And honestly: As mentioned already, when you buy a blog you don’t get the blogger. Just his home on the web. So why buy the blog then? Does anyone think that a domain name is that valuabe long term? Nobody even knows what blogging is going to be like three years from now.
So again: For fifty grand that is a bad purchase. Unless the buyer is John Chow himself, of course, and he just wants a site that ranks well for his own name….. ;)
Anyway, I have trouble keeping up. Is the site sold now or what?

I think 50K is a little silly, unless it is generating a ton more, that really is not a good business decision IMO.

I have read about this before, but I was not able to find out if the website ever sold. Does anyone know, if it was sold yet?
