Do not start a ‘make money online’ blog! That has almost become an unwritten rule of the Blogosphere. But you know what they say, rules were meant to be broken, am I not right? But this will probably be the best advice I’m going to give you guys, seriously. Do not start a ‘make money online’ blog!
Why, you ask?
Besides the fact that the Blogosphere is already too saturated with these types of blogs, and most of these ‘make money online’ blogs do not know the first thing about the subject, you’ll make a lot more money with a different niche. I mean, if you write about the same type of thing half the Blogosphere is discussing, I can guarantee it’s going to end up like the survival of the fittest, and odds are, you’re probably the one not surviving.
On top of that, make money online blogs have become such a turn-off to readers that if they were in the naked city, they probably wouldn’t have any sexual attractions. Okay, maybe not that much of a turn-off, but you get my point right?
Now, I’m sure a lot of you guys may be thinking, “well, Jay just doesn’t want us to start a money making blog because he’s scared of competition!” Um, no. If I was scared of competition, I definitely wouldn’t be blogging in this niche. And if I wasn’t already making money online, especially with this blog, I would have probably started a blog about something I love and know a lot about - sports.
Now, that’s some real competition! Just look at Lebron James taking his Cavs to a 2-0 lead in their series against the Wizards, or Paul Gasol lighting the Denver Nuggets up with 36-points, maybe the 76ers pulling an upset over the Pistons in Game 1 or Kevin Garnett and the Celtics representin’ for Boston!
Sorry, got slightly off track there.
So if you’re looking to actually make money online, especially with blogging, you definitely want to take this simple and straightforward advice, do not start a make money online blog because I can guarantee you that you’ll make more money talking about something you enjoy like movies (Forgetting Sarah Marshall was hilarious by the way and I’m sure it was number 1 in the box office), music, sports, um, the Boston Marathon, Oprah, Stephen King, scar rifle, the list just doesn’t end.
There are limitless things one could blog about and make money from. I mean, you could write about ‘Princess’ that ABC Family’s movie and make more money off that than a newbie trying to start a money making blog.
You don’t have to take my advice on that but if you want to learn how to blog for money, then you should not get into this niche. Trust me, as a owner of various blogs, you should pick a niche that no one really writes about; and if you do, that means less competition and more publicity or you. And with my publicity and traffic, that means more money for you!

Hmm, since I created geekhall.net, got domain and hosting payed for a year, then there is no point in turning back right now. I’ll think of it as an experiment. If it’s gonna work, I’ll do more good things in blogging directions - if not, well, bad luck :). So regarding this article - peoples! Don’t give up on creating Your own blog!

I think this is good advice, but I’m not sure that people are actually gonna listen to it. I mean I was aware that this niche is already saturated and I started a blog in it.
Maybe that’s just cause I am an idiot though.
Geekhall - Hey, I’m not saying to give up on blogs, I was saying too NOT go into a niche they know nothing about. People should blog about stuff they know about and more than likely, they’ll make more money than the “Make Money Online” niche. Plus, even if you paid for hosting for a year, you can host more than one blog/site on your account
Seth - Nah, you’re not an idiot and you’re right, I’m sure no one is gonna listen. But the whole point is to blog about what you know and are passionate about, and I guarantee you’ll make more money that way. Just look at Tina Su of thinksimplenow.com… I bet she makes more money than a majority of these MMO sites, including me!

Louis - So, if no one blogs about it then wouldn’t you stand out more instead of getting mixed into the crowd of thousands of others that would be blogging about the same thing you are? You stand out more and if you’re a good marketer, you should have no problem… on top of that, you have absolutely no competition until everyone wants to follow your footsteps…

You know Jay, I would say you are 80% correct. Make Money From Home blogs are a penny a dozen. However, I advise bloggers to look for niches. Look for the stuff people outside of the blogosphere are searching for. You’d be surprised at the simple things non-bloggers are seeking. Then when you find these things, blog about them. Your blog should be a resource, a solution to a problem, not another ribbon on an already highly decorated present.
Jay - I enjoyed this post quite a bit. I started blogging for work, for exposure, for sure to make money but also for a place people could come for anwers. I then started my personal blog for art, because it aint doing a damn bit of good sitting in a closet, I’ve been told I have a gift, and to share it! I have become quite passionate about my art site.
I find the money making blogs to be full of alot of the same information, and how many ways can you spin that tale. The top dogs are the top dogs, is anyone going to be able to kick them off the porch, sure seasoned bloggers could, but just starting out, I agree that it would have to be a niche area.
I totally agree, Jay. I think the enormous number of hapless Make Money Online blogs is just incredibly silly. And that’s part of the reason why I just started a Make Money Online blog (yes, you heard me right). And I’ve made a grand total of 4 dollars and 21 cents online since october (with hardly no work, though, I really should add that).
My MMO blog is slightly different than other MMO blogs, though. It’s basically just a journal of my experiment to see if it’s possible to make a full time income from blogging in just a year. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to write this particular blog since I just write what I’m doing anyway along with my goals and plans and personal commentary and whatnot, so I’m happy I made the decision to start it. I also think I’ll actually have a bit fun with it, and I’ll love looking back on it later and track my ‘journey’ - whether the experiement went well or not (it will go well, though, TRUST ME!!
) I think it might even be of interest to other bloggers to see a genuine, real time journal about someone blogging their way to a good income. (And I’m a pretty goal oriented guy and I love blogging, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I might even succeed in just a year).
Since I already work full time from home and have done so off and on for the better part of a decade, I’ll also feature some material on that kind of stuff. Basically, though, the blog just journals my experiment on blogging for bucks. It’s not by any stretch a blog I’m going to work hard to promote.
Re your comment “you should pick a niche that no one really writes about…” I personally agree, but I when picking a niche I think there is something that is even more important: writing about what you truly CARE about, have a passion for, and a certain degree of expertise in (or at least good knowledge of). On my two main blogs I’m writing about what I do professionally - and this is stuff I’ve been intensely passionate about for two whole decades (since I was a kid, basically). It’s also stuff I think I do quite well. For me, that’s the only way I could do this successfully over time, I think. I can’t believe the naivety of all the new bloggers wanting to write about finance and legal services - when they have no knowledge of or interest in the subjects - just because the AdSense keywords for those niches tend to pay well. These guys are never, ever going to be paid well for their blogging, the whole thing is just silly. (So is, obviously, the whole “look at my Ferrari, I’m a blogging and affiliate marketing guru” thing that so many broke and inept internet no-hopers get into.) Blogging for bucks is hard, so if you’re doing it just for the money I think you’re probably not going to make much money at all. You need to do exceptionally well in this field to really succeed. And people rarely do exceptionally well at what they aren’t passionate about. It’s as simple as that.
(I like your blog, though, that’s why I’m here. Just thought I should put that in. I like it partly because it’s honest, and because you really seem to know what you’re doing.)

HEy Jay hows it going. I agree and dont agree. Weird huh. this is going to sound bad but there are quite a blind leading the types in the MMO niche and sadly they make money because they market to the blind leading the crowd, There are very bloggers in the MMO niche that ACTUALLY show you HOW TO MAKE MONEY. These blogger also make money. but I wouldnt start another mmo niche blog. I have 4 other blogs in other niches that make more money than my MMO blog. Theyre ranking well for the long tail KW’s and Im building them to rank for the main kw’s are they in niches no-one is blogging about yep, Im competing with static sites with zippo backlinks other than internal links, poorly dont seo and theyre paking because well theyre pretty much using a KW in the url title. BLogs rock if you wanna compete against this sort of thing. Finding these niches arent all that hard really

@Jay, Yea, that’s also true. But the number of bloggers blogging about a topic may as well an indicator of how many people are interested on the niche.
I think it’s best to discover the most wanted niche with the least competition. We’re extremely lucky if we got a popular niche where there are only less than 10 results on SERP to compete

I absolutely agree with you. Too many make money online blog! Some blogger even don’t know what they talk about. Quality and usefulness of the content is important.

The rule is simple…if you want money then do something that catches eyes. I agree that if a blog contains all the same things as the other bloggers have already mentioned, the visitors loose interest in it. The second thing that i feel is while creating a blog one should have an in-depth knowledge about the subject. Even a “make-money-online-blog” can earn money if it serves something that the other blogs do not have.

I believe you may be right but I do disagree a bit because with hard work anything is possible. If your going to start a MMO Blog and not put forth any effort, then yes, try something else.

I totally agree: there are far too many blogs about making money online..
The main problem (apart from the fact that they repeat what has already been posted many times before)is that it only attract bloggers who want to make money online.
There are loads of potential visitors and readers ‘out there’ who are kept away from those blogs because they don’t provide them with answers about the things they want to find about…
I had some unexpected surprises lately with the results from a post about ‘how to make an Easter Bunny Cake’. I don’t believe that a post about ‘how to make money with your blog’ would have brought me the same amount of unique visitors and got listed in four ‘top ten’ Google search results pages in the process.
The post was ignored by my peers in the Bloggers centered bookmarking sites, but I can live with that…
The Google ads that were clicked on by those visitors hungry for information about Easter Bunny Cakes made up for it somehow.
The worst thing that I have noticed is that some of the ‘advices’ given in some of those blogs are not always personally checked by the bloggers who post them…
For example, in one of them Newsvine was listed among the social media sites that bloggers should use to get extra traffic to their blogs! Yikes! Double Yikes! Newsvine doesn’t accept submissons from its users’ own sites/blogs and repeated submissions of that kind ultimately lead to be barred from the site for Pete’s sake!
I wonder how many bloggers have found (or will eventually find) that out the hard way thanks (NOT!) to a fellow blogger they thought knew what he was talking about… Grrr!
Thanksfully you are not like that
Carry on the good work/blog…
