We all do this, it’s more common than you think; we tend to not comment as much as we should on other blogs. I mean, there are tons of reasons why people should, but we all have to remember the small things that will help us in the future. I mean, the hard part is to read the entire post. Once you get over that little hump, the easy part is to take 10 seconds to make a quick comment.
So, why should I leave comments?
The obvious reason is because you’ll get the attention of the blog owner and possibly get in good with them. But that’s not the only reason why you should.
First of all, you will get guaranteed traffic. The guaranteed traffic has a few variables, of course. If you participate with an in-depth, interesting comment, you’ll catch other commentator’s attention which will draw them to your site. Also, it depends on how big the blog is. For instance, I commented on Doshdosh once and simply from that one comment I left, I received double-digit visitors.
Just make sure you include your website URL or no visitors for YOU!
Also, with the guaranteed traffic, most blog owners (including myself) has the “comment luv plugin” which displays your most recent post through your RSS Feeds. This works just as good as including a link within your comment or signature.
You’ll get rewarded. Uh huh, you will. There are so many blogs that reward their top commentators with a backlink to their site.
Not only will you get rewarded with backlinks, but some people hold daily, weekly or monthly contests in which it’s just as simple to enter as commenting! Hey, if you were going to comment anyways, you’ll just increase your chances of winning in a contest you might have not known about!
Lastly, you will get noticed! I mentioned this already, but the more you comment on a particular site, I guarantee you that the blog owner will notice. But the more you comment, the more you’ll get noticed. I mean, look at it this way; all these big name bloggers read each others blogs – whether it’s for competitive reasons or because they’re a fan – and just by commenting, you just increased your exposure to them.
Also, commenting does not only apply to blogs. Commenting on social bookmarking and media sites will increase your chances of getting exposure to your profile which leads to your site!
Don’t worry; I finally switched over to Wordpress so it makes it easier for you guys to comment. And not only that, I installed “comment luv” and “top commentators” plugins.
So, what are you waiting for? Start commenting already!

Bro, you didn’t need to write a whole post to have me comment… the sexy chick did it for me. Nice looking blog
Young Online Millionaire’s last blog post..EXPOSED: The 10 Most Expensive Make Money Blogs on EntreCard
I don’t think most people need any rewards to comment if the post is really interesting and they really have something to say about it. At least I don’t! And you don’t really need a sexy chick on every post to attract people.

Young – LOL! Hey, like I wrote in http://www.datmoney.com/2008/02/5-reasons-why-you-should-include-images-in-every-post.html you should include images to attract your readers lol… but thanks for commenting!
Raj – You are absolutely right. Though, I was stating the fact that people tend to overlook the power of commenting and how it can help you in more ways than one. And I can’t help with the sexy chicks… lol it’s a drug I tell ya!
Mike – I’ll pass the message along to her if I ever see her in person lol

Jay’s last blog post..Never Underestimate Commenting!
I think the great thing about blogs is the comment section. It’s great to have the ability to interact with the author and like-minded viewers. I rarely visit blogs that have their comments section disabled. After all, I want to know what everyone is thinking. Good lookin’ women help too, I suppose!

Hi Jay,
shouldn’t you like take out your own name from the top commentators list? how does that plugin work? javascript?
BobbyT’s last blog post..Disclosure policy: Do you disclose or not?
Rob – I rarely see people who have their comments section disabled. Plus, you always want to hear open minded opinions, and sometimes it leads to juicy gossip lol
Bobby – That was brought over from the move from Blogger. Notice how there’s no link for it. I tried to filter it but it wasn’t working right so hopefully a lot of people will comment so that gets pushed away.

So this is your new Wordpress get-up, eh? Nice post, I’m sooo guilty of not leaving comments on people’s blogs. I also don’t call people back, send in RSVP’s, or call on holidays. Perhaps there is a pattern here
*ahem* but I’m commenting now, hot half nekkid chica not required

But we like the beautiful chica here!
Pahn – Yes, comments can go a VERY long way! Plus, you’ll at least have one person going to your blog (me!)
Dennis – That is very true, especially when people share their thoughts and opinions. Woohoo!

Yeah… you had me at scantily clad babe. I’m thinking I need more babe pics on my site now.
As much as I love your posts … have you considered a permanent switch to the Eva picture? Just a thought …
I try to always comment on blogs when I stop by — nice article — although my photo would’ve attracted much more attention
Commenting works very well for building social referral traffic, ie, traffic that doesn’t click on ads.

Thanks
Ooh.. I seriously thought about making the switch, but finally decided to stick with blogger. As a newbie blogger (3 months) – I was SO not comfortable with self-hosting… but maybe I’ll brave it up someday…

Commenting is great and I even used to use MEMOKEYS to post the same type of comment, but I recently got caught, so I stopped
I also had COMMENT LUV before, but due to the jump in visitors and hits I’ve been receiving, I had to turn off a lot of plugins to cope with the load times. I love thanking my viewers, but I try to do it in other ways.

Linc – LOL! Honestly, I almost wanted to leave her up for another day. But don’t worry, I put the link on my most recent post for those who want to see a picture of the sexy Eva Mendes!
Nanjo – I’m curious now, which picture would you have put to attract people?
Frank – Yeah, definitely. A lot of people STILL overlook that fact… but I have to start commenting a LOT more!
Christian – LOL! I bet after each paragraph, you scrolled back up to look at her, huh? lol
Rachel – I commented on your blog but like I said, your blog wasn’t what I expected when I first read “Baked blog” lol!
Mike – Don’t worry man, after I get rejected by her I’ll say “Hey, Mike searchfeature said how YOU doin?” lol
Scott – Backlinks help you in various ways – Technorati authorities, Google Pagerank, SEO, etc. The “comment luv” plugin is, well, look at some of the comments with the “last blog post” and link… basically, the “comment luv” plugin takes your latest post from your feed and posts it whenever you comment. Hope that helps, feel free to ask questions.
Dette – Well, most people say to start at Blogger and then switch to Wordpress. So whenever you feel comfortable about switching, let me know and I’ll try to help you out!
Jay
Dammit Mike, why did you have to comment in between me replying back to everyone lol! But we’re glad you stopped… because you got caught lol.
But check you out getting all big and everything… hopefully I can catch up sometime!
Jay
Well. I’m not commenting until Jay gets a picture of a hot male to head his posts. You have nothing here for us girls, Jay. So until then……

I also believe in using imagery for blog posts. It’s the killer space requirements for the images that kill me though. Do you know of a good resource for pulling in random images via keyword?

Sexy chick pictures do not inspire me either, but I do have to concede I do not comment enough. Has something to do with the fact I have enough projects going I am like a one armed paper hanger.
But I promise to do better…
Phil – LOL! I was really laughing out loud when I read that you put the wrong URL. But I can tell you that switching to WP has helped increase my comments.
Jack – I see more and more people coming back which is definitely a good feeling. I try to read all my commentators posts too. But I never realized how many people actually comment here now lol!
Mike – It’s not ONLY because of the girl… only about 90% lol!
Fitness – It’s always good when you get lots of traffic from peoples plugins. That’s why I have the top commentator and comment luv plugins to help out my readers.
Lexi – I’m sure we are all guilty of not commenting more. It’s understandable, but to NEVER comment is a no no I would say. But sexy chicks don’t do it for you? lol dammit! Back to the drawing board…

Jay’s last blog post..Why Relationships and Dating is Similar to Blogging
I find responding to comments in my blog to be half the blogging experience. I’m not sure why all bloggers don’t engage their readers who bother to leave comments. I’m lucky to have some of the funniest commenters around, making my humor blog that much more hilarious. I reward them with CommentLuv and personally engaging them. It’s always a party at The Junk Drawer.

Well, sex definitely sells and the picture got me reading the entire post…lol. I know that many bloggers ignore the ‘power of quality comments’ but they can benefit in more than just one way…I gave to admit that I tend to slack when it comes to comments but can only get better. How about those one word comments??? Maybe its just me but I totally dislike them and don’t really see the point of them …great post by the way…
Commenting is great for traffic and building up relationships with fellow bloggers as well.
Good post.
Geoserv’s last blog post..Google Pagerank Update
I do not know about the others, I only comments on topics catch my eye. I do not know the benefit before I read this post. I also like to read other people’s comments on the topic, to see how different people think with different angle. However, I hate the comments without deep thought about the topic. Now I know why they do that. Looking for links only.
this is very cool. but do you really think that people will come in? I strongly doubt. People only come to read the blog post, and when they are done they just leave, why would they bother to go to read comments, which are nothing but different mindsets.
Orkut Guides last blog post..Oriya Graphic Scraps (Rathayatra Special -II)
My own personal theory is that comments are the reverse of a link. They are a way for people with related content to push a connection.
Maybe I should patent that and sell it to google.

Testing is one of the keys to good marketing. Maybe you should test male vs. female pictures. That would be interesting and good fodder for a post.
Ned Careys last blog post..Evictions Made Easy
Hi Jay,
I totally agree on the true benefits of commenting. But apart from the backlinks potential, it’s growing your blogging community and making new friends too. As it is blogging by itself is already pretty boring so this adds a different dimension to it. It makes IM not so impersonal after all.
Peter Lee
Well, this is exactly the post that I needed to read right now.
I have been commenting recently on blogs which I have been reading and wondering whether or not it is worth the effort (it is some effort if you are going to comment properly).
This post has made it really clear to me and I thank-you for the shared wisdom.

Yea nice picture of the girl. Do you have a resource for public domain images of cute women? I am seriously looking so let me know if you have the chance, thanks.
I do agree that commenting will help bring traffic to your blog or site.
I actually started commenting a couple of weeks ago and I noticed the traffic it brings to our VoIP and Tech blog. Also I found excellent blog sites by checking the blogs of those I see who makes regular comments.
Forget about blog lists, commenting will get you traffic and will let you find very good blog sites at the same time.
Not only will you get rewarded with backlinks, but some people hold daily, weekly or monthly contests in which it’s just as simple to enter as commenting! Hey, if you were going to comment anyways, you’ll just increase your chances of winning in a contest you might have not known about!
