Things You Should Consider Before Submitting as a Guest Poster

nick riviera of the simpsons as a guest bloggerThe other day I mentioned the good and the bad things about guest posting, and at the end, people should at least consider taking a shot at it if you’re looking to get a little more exposure for your blog. Not only will you exposure yourself to a potentially larger audience that may have never heard of you, but the chances of your readership growing increases as well.

But here are some quick things that I have learned in my guest posting experience:

You need to have a thick skin – I probably mentioned this a bunch of times before, but not everyone will like you. Matter of fact, I’m not too fond of you. (That was a joke, I love all my readers!)

More than likely, you will have a lot of people criticizing your post, knowledge, writing, etc, but that’s a given. Are you perfect? Well, neither am I. So be prepared for the criticism!

Guest Posting Will Bring You Traffic – Yes, and don’t forget that. The larger the audience, the more exposure you have for yourself.

You Will Get Noticed – I made this separate from the traffic point because getting “noticed” and receiving a bunch of visitors are different.

For instance, if your guest post gets published on an A-list blog, not only will you be exposed to all their readers but you just increased your chances of getting in good with an A-list blogger. Do you think the owner of that A-list blog will never check out your blog? I don’t think so.

If you’re lucky, he/she may become a regular reader and potentially give you a shout out or two… or even better, collaborate with you on some project.

So, still considering guest posting? Well, here are some of the things you should think about before submitting a guest post:

1. Is this my best written article? – Well, it may not necessarily need to be but that’s the mindset that you should have. See, there’s a big difference besides publishing a post on your own blog and on someone else’s’.

Now, don’t get me wrong, if your article is not the best written, more than likely it won’t be approved for publishing anyways. And if you don’t think it’s the best, don’t even bother submitting it to begin with.

2. Will I Receive a Backlink? – Almost all bloggers who accept guest posts will give you a backlink. But it doesn’t hurt to double check if they will. And if they do not give you any credit, then don’t bother with submitting it.

3. Stay on Topic – Don’t bother submitting a guest post about models and lingerie to a marketing/making money online blog. You want to stay on topic with the blogs niche.

4. Do NOT Bullshit; Know What You’re Talking About – You may potentially fool others that come to your blog, but if you’re guest blogging for a very large audience, you think they won’t know that you just BSed your way onto an A-list blog?

Matter of fact, I’m going to make that as a separate point to reiterate the importance of it.

5. Know What You’re Talking About and Research! – Even if you think you know what you’re talking about, it doesn’t hurt to do some additional research to prove your point or just support your thoughts. Again, if you bullshit or there’s a slight chance you may have mistaken a point, there will be a lot of people out to get you.

So, if you haven’t gotten a chance to guest post, you should at least try it out to experience it for yourself.

Quick shout out to our friend Patrick of Piggybankpie.com for getting me into guest posting.

Great post. Having a thick skin and know what you are talking about is important.

How do you approach bloggers when you want to guest post on their blogs?

Bobby – Yes, I would consider inviting a guest blogger. I’ve been looking for on for my other blog for a while.

And thanks, I just fixed that link so now you can check out Patrick’s blog. He knows a LOT more about guest posting.

Chris – There are various ways of approaching bloggers to guest post. If you approach an A-list blogger, get straight to the point in a professional manner and submit your entry to them. They’re usually good with replying back with a yes or no. But do NOT hound them…

yeappp thats what I have been saying on my post, to please read and understand what the post is all about before leaving any comment. Because I really don’t like receiving comment that doesn’t make any sense at all. I feel bad getting comment like “HI nice Blog”, or”Nice post”… common’ … I usually don’t publish those kind of comments.. Sound like spamming to me…

I think guest posting is a great idea. I am going to put some things together for use on some popular blogs that I’ve been reading lately. As long as they are quality articles it should help with traffic.
