woman frustrated with writers blockI have met a lot of bloggers and had this discussion numerous times - “Why can’t I think about anything to blog about?

There have been tons of people who start to freak out over the fact that they may potentially miss a day or two of posting. Of course, this usually leads to people forcing themselves to write posts; and with that, the quality of those articles is almost always lower than usual. (Except for *please insert your name here if you are a DatMoney reader*)

And if it’s already low… well… I don’t know what to tell you You do not have to post everyday!

Plus, if you’re not going to put out the best damn article you feel you have written (in your mind) then you shouldn’t post it. I mean, if you have 10 or 10,000 visitors that read your blog everyday, you want your readers to enjoy the article. You want them to indulge themselves with a nice read while they enjoy their Starbucks latte. Most importantly, you want them to continue to come back!

And no, I don’t drink Starbucks lattes… it’s more like a venti sugar-free skim ice vanilla latte. :-D

It has happened to the best of us, we aren’t perfect! But if you’re a blogger, you’re a writer and even the best of the best get writers block. So instead of stressing over the fact that you can’t think of something to write, why not use that time for something else? Like marketing your previous article (which I’m sure is great!). And by the end of the day, with all the marketing you did for your own site, you will probably end up with hundreds a couple good ideas to write about for the future.

Don’t try to beat yourself up to post seven days a week. Honestly, if you post three to five times a week, that should be good enough. And on rare occasions, you can post less than that and get a LOT more readers, especially since you’ll have a lot more time to promote your blog.

Don’t believe me? You don’t have to. Feel free to go talk with Tina Su of thinksimplenow.com. She is a very good example of a successful blogger who only posts twice a week. Yes, you read right – ONLY twice a week.

Again, don’t believe me, her stats speaks for itself. (4,000+ subscribers, 40,000 Alexa Rating, PR4 – shall I continue?) And for the record, I’m not trying to suck up to Ms. Su. (Hey Tina! :-) How you been?)

So, you’re forcing a lot of posts, huh? Well, I have been doing this all wrong as well. I used to try to post once a day, and if I were to miss a day, I would try to force a post. And trust me; your readers WILL know that you tried to force one out.

And I’m not only talking about the stench!

More recently, I started to miss skip days so I can focus on writing better posts and in more depth than I normally would. And with this said, one of my blogs that I have only updated about five times within the past two weeks had skyrocketed in visitors. It went from the low hundreds daily and jumped into the thousands! And this happened on more than one occasion.

Was it a coincidence? I wouldn’t say so. It just gave me more time to write better posts and also promote it.

So, don’t let yourself get stressed out by trying to post everyday, it’s not needed.

Plus, it looks like I see a gray hair coming in. I hope it’s not from blogging!

I so much agree with you. If you don’t have anything to say: don’t tell the whole world.
    Very educational and educating post!

Wishing you a great end to your week :-)

I actually have the opposite problem. I don’t know when to shut up. I’ll cure it kinda sorta when I branch out to some other blogs starting in March.

I’m really new to the blogging scene, hadn’t written, or really read one before. I wasn’t aware of the *rules* on posting frequency and from the beginning I decided to only post twice a week. It suites me and I think I’ll keep it this way, I hope my readers feel the same way?

I gotta agree with you. I usually end up posting everyday. I use the google notebook to list things/topics that I want to talk about.

LOL I have to disagree, but this is just me, I guess.

I do not run into these so called bloggers writers block problem etc.

My main problem is that I do not have enough time to roll out my posts.

24 hours a day is not enough. T_T

Hence, my problems is prioritizing which article to push out first.

Oh yeah, I make it an effort to pust out at least an article per day.

If I missed a day, I do a post dated post LOL.

    Cheers!

Hey great post! You really hit the nail on the head here.

I’ve been wrestling with this notion for a while now too. I’ve been blogging daily for the past 6 weeks, but lately it has become increasingly difficult to write great content, since blogging itself is really dominating my time.

I think I may ease up a bit on the posting for a while so I can finally get some serious work done, and hopefully in turn get more ideas to blog about.

Then, I’ll not only be bringing more interesting stuff to the table, it’ll be of much higher quality.

I guess there’s no shame in that, although it’s kind of tough to let go of the daily posting streak :P

You’re so right! But it is also logical to strive for daily post, especially when you are a new blogger. It is a sure way to get heard.
    I love RT Cunningham’s comment!

Great information. Quality is where it’s at no matter what it’s regarding. I like writing and sharing knowledge with others. But it’s also wise to take a break and promote yourself. Plus it’s good to get outside and see the rest of the world.

I was a relatively early political blogger and I set myself the goal of writing one good, thought provoking original piece a week and sharing quick comments and links when I could. Some days that was three times a day and sometimes it was every couple of days. Now, with so many people link blogging and repeating the talking points of their “side”, I’m perfectly satisfied to write that original piece once a week - and my traffic hasn’t suffered at all. On the other hand, if your goal is to have readers and not just to shout to the world whether it’s read or not, committing to some sort of schedule and working to write good posts on that schedule is important. The schedule doesn’t have to be daily, by any means, though.
