The ‘How’ on Building Traffic to Your Blog

Monday, November 19th, 2007 | Blogging for Traffic with 1 Comment

Blogging has become one of the largest growing interests on the internet because of promotion. Nowadays, people are starting blogs to promote their opinions, products or knowledge.

A lot of people assume if you “write then they will come.” But that’s not exactly true. You can be the best writer in the world with the most interesting topics and no one would even know about it.

You need to promote your blog to readers as much as you would promote your opinions, products and knowledge through your writings.

Here are some basic ways of getting started on your path to an influential blogger.

1. Write Posts That People Would Actually Read – I know I just mentioned that – if you write they won’t necessarily come – but if they do, you definitely want them to come back. This is the obvious and most important thing about a blog because your audience wants to read what you have to say. So, write often, make sure to fix grammatical mistakes and stick to the post topic.

2. Optimize Your Posts for Search Engines – SEO is one of the main focuses you should pay attention to. The reason is because the more posts you have that contain primary keywords, the better your chances are in showing up on the first couple of pages for search engine results.

- Make sure your blog URL contains the primary keyword you want to optimize.
- Focus your primary keywords in the title post.
- Use your secondary keywords in the body of the post.

3. Submit Your Blog and RSS Feed to Directories – If you publish a blog then you should definitely submit it to big directories like Yahoo, but also make sure you submit it to the smaller blog directories and search engines too.

Check out “Best Blog Directory and RSS Submission Sites” for various sites you can submit your blog to.

4. Ping the Blog Services – If you are using blogger or feedburner, they have an option where you can turn on and off the automatic pings. But by sending out this ping, you let these services know your blog has been updated so they will come check it out.

Try Ping-O-Matic because after the first submission, you can bookmark it so it’ll be an easy click to ping all the services. Nice and easy.

5. Get Your Links Out There! – You want to get your link out there for people to potentially click on them so they can visit your site. The obvious one – if you have more than one site – is to put a link to your blog on every one of them.

But also, you can trackback to other blogs from your posts.

You should post comments on other peoples’ pages, especially the fact that almost every comment field allows you a link back to your site.

Lastly, offer to exchange links with other blogs and websites. I have something similar in the “Special Thanks To” section.

These are indeed the basic traffic building blocks for blogs.

Two more suggestions that I would add to this is to use OnlyWire to submit your posts to the social and bookmarking networks all at once right from your blog-face…also, be sure to leave helpful/insightful comments on other blogs in the same niche as yours ;-)
